I'm thinking of getting the most bang out of my 252 w/o spending 25K for a
4WD machine. Plyscamp has already put the 35HP Vanguard on one of his. If you could combine that with 4WD that little 252 would be sweet.
Anyone out there thought about or actually installed 4WD on a 252? Vermeer makes an oscillating 2 tire front axle with hydraulic steeriing as an option, about $1200 according to Vermeer. From there it would mean modifying that to fit 2 hydraulic motors to make those steering wheel also drive wheels. How hard would it be to add? Would mean another hydraulic lever. Would the hydraulic pump be able to handle the increased load? Would only need to be part-time 4WD, since the usual rear wheel drive is fine 95% of the time. Just that the winters up here in PNW are pretty soggy.
Carlton makes their 4012 with 4WD, wonder if you could adapt their front steering/drive wheels to a 252? Or maybe adapt the 4WD from the 352?
May be more work than it's worth, but love the maneuverability of the 252. If it had the 35HP engine it should cut alot faster while maintaining a compact footprint. The Vermeer 352 is alot bigger, 18" longer and 700 lbs. heavier, and $25K or so.
