So this past Tuesday sometime during the night our shop was broken into with the following items taken.

4 saws
1 generator
1 backpack blower
1 air compressor
1 arc wielder
2 full sets of climbing gear

and various other items.

So Wednesday morning everyone gets to the yard to find we were broken into and robbed. The owner is fuming mad, as this is the 2nd time this year. The first time someone ripped the pined doors right off the boom trucks with a truck to get at the equipment inside.

So the police are called and we explain the situation, the gates lock after 11:00pm at night so no vehicles have any way to get near the shop. I was personally there until just after 11:00 pm so no way it happened before then. So they figure it happened on foot and decide to start looking around the woods that surround the whole area.

About 1/2 hour goes by and we get the call that they had found ALL of the gear stashed deep in the woods near by. The boss is stoked to get everything back, but not so fast...

Police want to setup a sting and call in the undercover guys to set everything up and ask us to leave everything as is and continue on our day as if nothing is out of the ordinary. So all day they have a team hiding in the tree's in view of the stolen goods and undercover vehicles near by.

I finish the last of the work on the trucks around 11:00 pm and still no change and all the gear is still in its hiding place. and the undercover team is still hiding out. The police talk about shutting it down after being there all day "in the pouring rain" but hear us all talking of baseball bats, bear spray and our own undercover team to take over. They decide to wait it out until morning for the safety of the robbers :)

2:30 AM this morning the boss gets the call. 3 guys in a pickup proceed to hiding place and load it all up into a pickup truck and drive away. 1 block later they are surrounded by RCMP squad and a group of tree guys with big smiles on their faces.

All ended well and the sewer rats are all in jail and we get there names today at 4 PM today.

glad to hear about happy endings...

very unusual to ever see stolen gear again.

Awesome! How did the boss feel about leaving all the gear sitting in the pouring rain all day? I guess it was worth it, because these jerks would have just kept coming back.

Are you in the maritime provinces?

The gear spends most of the time in the pouring rain on the job, so no big deal.

I hear your summer was dryer that usual this year!

We got all the rain in Ontario.

Glad they were caught but what kind of police force you got out there? I know most thief's aren't too bright but the "undercover team" expected them to show up in the daylight? It would've seemed obvious to me they would return after dark when they didn't expect anyone to be around.

Anyway congrats on getting your stuff back.

Local police here are stretched rather thin in resources so usually they are reserved for far more serious crimes.

They figured our own undercover team might result in said "more serious crime" so stuck around.

and yes, we have very dumb criminals here :)

Silk,

Good ta hear you and the gang got the Gear back.

It's a darn shame the Local bears have to go into winter without one last meal though.;)

Maybe after the names are released and things settle down, somebody will feed the poor things a late season snack..:D

Stay safe!

Yes, congrats that you guys prevailed. I came into work on a Monday morning one day to find one of the side tool boxes ripped open on our main chip truck. Various tools and gear was stolen, but what ticked me off even more, the idiots climbed inside the tool box which went through to the other side and knocked over a gallon container of tree paint which ended up all over everything on the shelf they didn't steal.
Cops come and do the report and I go straight to the insurance carrier while the guys try to clean stuff up. They inform me, oh you don't tool thief coverage on your truck unless they break into the cab.:censored:

You are lucky to have cops that give a crap up there to go through all of that trouble for you guys.

Here they just write a report if you beg them and go back to waiting for a real hero job to do instead of the mundane run of the mill property crimes.

so that's why I didn't get my stuff I was promised..............

j/k, glad you get your stuff back and the names of the hood rats, I'd be looking for them after they get out....oh yeah...

talking about being robbed, when I was a GF for Davey we had 8 trucks at one place all at the same time get cleaned out, gas cans and all, they even took bar and mix oil.........these guys came prepared with portable drills and saws all to cut the lock bars off the boxes and chains inside the boxes.

For those of us in the same area, any chance of getting the names? So we know who to look out for.
