While visiting my arborist friend in Bloomington, Indiana, a few weeks back, I got a photograph of a piece of artwork on his wall.

It was from Oregon. We each acquired this type of art from a previous customer, who made them while living. She has passed away.

Her name was Violet Frost Farr - a retired school teacher.

This art is made from wings of maple seeds. She collected the seeds, cut away the winged parts, and glued them for the feathers of the various birds. And painted to match thier natural colors.

Small feathers are like wings from Japanese maples, and the big feathers from like Big Leaf maple, etc..

Wow very nice. I love when people come up with interesting ways to make art. I will think about that the next time Im scooping them out of my gutters in a rainstorm.

In a way, I'm sort of surprised that it's not done by more people. Actually, she's the only one I was aware of. She made smaller frames with little birds like wrens or chickadees.

This would be a cool artform for kids to master - even adults. That's sort of why I posted - toss the idea out there.

Very cool. We went on a studio tour in the town we spend our weekends. It's amazing how some people have made decent livings creating art. I liked the chance to see some of their places. Most all of them had some kind of garden thing going on. I was stealing ideas left and right. Made a few friends and possibly got a job out of the day.

My kids call them helicopters

That's a neat use of "helicopters," as my kids call them. I would commission one of Daffy Duck!

I recently bought a picture by Violet Frost (Farr).

I recently bought a picture by Violet Frost (Farr). When this one was completed she was known as Violet Frost. On the back of the picture it had her card attached "Maple Seed Magic" and also a newspaper clipping from The Daily Astorian in Astoria Oregon, dated October 8, 1976. It described her art work and how she got started working with maple seeds. My picture is beautiful. It is of a trout jumping out of the water to catch a dragon fly. The fish is wonderfully colored and looks very realistic. I tried looking her up on the web and only found your posting regarding her talents. Thank you. Now I have more information. That she married or remarried and obtained the sir name Farr. Perhaps now I will be able to find out more about her. Thanks again. Lucy
