good stuff.

that willow is one of my most fearful climbs. in fact you wont find me TIP'n too high in them out of fear of tearing the limb off. you got 20 lbs on me JPS so whatever is safest for you will work for me. lol

me personally? if in fact these tree's are as beat up as you say, then i would have zero problem spiking them.

oak? no. willow all beat up? sure.

if they are coming out in a couple of years anyhow, then spike the b*****ds
willows are dangerous at the best of times so spike away :)

You mentioned you were taking out dead over the driveway. Why not use a lift?

That willow sounds like the kind you don't want to be attached to, with or without spikes.

The company I was climbing for does not own a bucket and you probably would not get outriggers down on the one lane driveway going through, or hit the back side where the hung tree was.

every time I work on that property I tell my client he should get a bucket to work everything he can reach, his reply is always that he would not need me on the job then.

When I tied in I was on 5 inch wood, I was not too enthused with with going high in these.

We have been using a lift on a lot of the larger properties with relatively short trees here John. We built a platform and attached it to the forks of the lift. Works great when you have plenty of room to maneuver around and get to where you need to be to make your cuts. However, if it rains you will take a beating if you can't get in there without tearing up the ground. Sounds like this would be out of the question if you are in a marshy area. We did a few properties like that then went to two climber teams on the larger properties with a climber and a ladder man. Also had a 4 man clean up crew feeding the chipper and cleaning up behind us. Pretty efficient when you have two climbers and a ground man with each. Enter the tree with the ladder, do what needs to be done and move on to the next tree. We did 250 trees like this in 10 days last Sept. on a large ranch here.

BTW,

I saw 13 accidents on my way home today due to ice on the roads. There are two vehicles abandoned in front of my house right now because they can't make the hill. Looks like dejavu all over again. Might be seeing you again in the near future... Lets hope we're not in for anything of the magnitude of last years storm...
