I wonder if it's hopeless. We are about 50 miles east of the nearest infestation. We have a lot of ash trees. Figuring they are going to get hit sooner or later, I pick on them for firewood even if they are healthy.

Isn't the quarantine just delaying the inevitable?

surprisingly my county isn't on there.

There are some countries not shown that I have cut in southern ohio that had the borer 2 years ago....yet they don't have it listed.

It is The Domino Effect

It's taken it about 5 years to get through about half the state so I think it will be throughout the state in about another 5 years. I agree that it is just slowing down the inevitable. The logging companies may as well get all that they can now because in another 10 years their probably won't be any left. That is just my 2 cents worth.

Do you suppose if they wipe out the Ash they will find the next best thing to feed on and start all over again on another species? Michigan is supposed to start a chemical within the next couple weeks that was tested in Switzerland with a supposed 99% effective rate.

Its always something I swear. Most of the elms i almost lost are just starting to make a come back. Now I have two dead ashes on my place don't know if its because of the bugs but geauga isn't on the list yet.

No, they won't. This type of borer insect ONLY eats in ash trees. Very tree specific although with a non-native spp like the EAB anything might be possible.

My county is still not on the list, which is a surprise. I know the Dept of Ag depends on people to report sighting of the borer that they than investigate. Maybe people are not reporting as many cases because they don't want the hassle?

Give it time and Geauga will be on the list. I'm in Trumbull and I'm sure it's just a matter of time for us as well.

For your dead ashes, peel back some of the bark and look for the little D-shaped holes. That'll tell you pretty quick if it's the bugs or not.

My county (Wayne) was added to the list recently. I imagine they will be in Holmes County soon if they are not there already.

No more baseball bats?

I have been cutting alot of ash lately. I've noticed them dying the past 3-4 years. None on my property are healthy. I decided that I'd rather cut the tree down and have too much wood for burning then to just watch it rot and blow over or worse land on a car. IMO I think the species (around here anyway) is on the way out. What a shame. a great looking tree that can burn green. Hope I'm wrong. Are they still making baseball bats out of ash or have they gone totally to maple? Does it matter?

i talked to a dept of ag fellow recently. he told me if you live near an interstate or major road chances are greater it will be your way. i guess it was along 80 close to lasalle and they tried to stop it but so far no luck. i live along the the mississippi and their are traps for it set up all over.

That may work for a couple of trees in a yard, but we have 90 acres of woods with probably thousands of ash trees, some of them very large.

ah good point, I only have three autumn purples in my yard and really dont want to lose them!!!

no kidding WOW! I learn something everytime I log on here. No aluminum bats in pro baseball, gee you're sharp...;)... Anyways, here in little ole NH I was splitting some ash when low and behold I found an Emerald Ash Borer. I stupidly squashed it instead of saving it. I later found a web site which showed the states effected by the Ash Borer. The site said NewHampshire had no ash borers. I just e-mailed NH's Commisioner of Agriculture to inform her of this epidemic...It's common knowledge around here the Ash trees are dying off but nothing to my knowledge is being done here. I also read that the EAB is from China...Man the Chinese are getting us from all angles...So what I propose is that we save all the EAB's we find and send them back to china with all our broken splitters, tools and lead paint contaminated toys our kids play with that come from china with a big F--- You...Just a thought.:monkey:
