I got a chipper with the 330cid v8 this weekend. The previous owner remover the distributer cap to check the points etc. I don't think he put it back together properly. The engine seems to be out of time and it backfires thru the carb. I am wondering if anyone has any info on timing this engine. I can't seem to find much in my searches. Also, I am wondering about the firing order? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like plug wires are crossed. Remove the engine cover, get some light in there and clean off the engine. Firing order is cast on the intake manifold. Timing mark is on lower pulley, and an arrow scale next to that.

The 330 HD Industrial V8 was used on the 16 in Asplundh drum chippers in mid 1970's. Smooth, easy to run and monster power. For parts go to an older store that still keeps reference books, tell them to look under a 1975 Ford F400, F500 truck, , and you'll be set.
