I got a chipper with the 330cid v8 this weekend. The previous owner removed the distributer cap to check the points etc. I don't think he put it back together properly. The engine seems to be out of time and it backfires thru the carb. I am wondering if anyone has any info on timing this engine. I can't seem to find much in my searches. Also, I am wondering about the firing order? Thanks in advance!

If I am not mistaken, the 330 belongs to the FE engine line, should have the same firing order as a 360/390 engine that was used in the pickups during the 60's through the mid 70's. I will double check and post more info when I get to my books.

Keep in mind, the moderators may move this to the heavy equipment section, just in case you can't find your thread, lol.

lol, he already posted the identical there the other day!

Thanks for the reply. I got it running last night. I found a bad wire between the coil and distributor. Once I replaced that it fired and ran but it still isn't quite right. I let it run for a while to shake out all the cob webs. It still backfired thru the carb on occasion. It started to rain so I couldn't put the timing light on it.I did run it long enough to chip a few limbs and it worked fine. I also found an acorn shell down in the carb! It needs a bit of TLC no doubt, but I think it was worth buying. Any input on where to set the timing? I'm thinking I will start at 10° BTDC. I can't really find any specific info on this 330. Thanks again

Yes, I did put this in the large equipment forum but I thought it would get more exposure here, which it has. The more the better, I can't find much info on this industrial engine. Thanks

Hey! If the carb is seeing backfire activity, the timing is probably too far advanced, OR the valves aren't sealing anymore (Sometimes a top end overhaul is in order) One trick to try is remove the cap from the distributor and have someone rotate the crank a few degrees back and forth and see how much lash there is in the timing chain. If it's whipped it'll give you grief too. It's not too hard to change. remove the belts, vibration dampener, and the timing cover and gasket, replace the seal and chain watch the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets!
