O.K. guys, color me stupid here if you want, but there is something I've gotta ask for some time now. I have been watching ebay for months, first looking for a good 046, then bought a new 460. Now I am looking for a good 026 to go along with the big saw. What I don't understand is why people pay such high prices for used equipment?????? With the inherent nature of a 2-stroke to go bad. Saws that one knows absolutely no history of, if it was taken care of, blown up, right fuel mix, the list goes on. I have actually seen these used saws go for only a few dollars less than new retail!! I have always had a rule of thumb for buying used, or repairing broken equipment......if it is more than half of new, buy a new one. Does anyone agree with me on applying this for saws? Another thing I don't understand is why people immediately start running the auction up as soon as it is open. I would think someone would quietly watch until the last few hours, or minutes, then bid...to keep a bidding war from starting, and hopefully get the best deal possible for themselves. I'm not jumping on anyone, or trying to offend, I just don't understand.

I agree whole heartedly. It's ridculous what some used saws go for, especially 029's. I do like to find good deals on new stuff, but sometimes it takes a while to find one. I view some of the bidding wars as cheap entertainment.

Boy am I laughing out loud right now since there is someone that shares these feelings with me. I saw an 029 sell for $300.00 used!!!!Stihl runs these saws every winter for $299. and they usually throw in a hard case or a chain or both!! This guy bought it for full retail, used, and had to pay shipping on top! I am wondering if I will find a good 026 for a reasonable price. Like I said, I would rather pay for a new one if used costs much more than half of a new one. I read in another post a fellow that bought an 044 for about $135, good deal. Even if it needs a part or two, it was worth it.

Well, Ive seen the best of both worlds on ebay. I purchased a 2001 model 026 That was hardly used for 150.00+15.00 for freight.
And sold a 290/029 for 275.00+ 25.00 for freight the only reason i got the 026 was because it was listed as a model 311Y.:D

I seriously doubt if i will be buying any whole saws anymore on ebay. more than 1/2 were not a very good deal in my estimation. There is just not a good way to know if the product is as described. I will probably always surf the site, look at what's there...I have gotten parts for a couple of things there that woukld have been very difficult otherwise.

As far as bidding, when, and how much...I know I lost at least two times due to my slow connection, trying to time things to the last second. Everybody does that. Since there is usually nothing I "need", I don't often sweat it. If I want something badly enough, I will decide what I want to pay for it beforehand, and keep that in mind always. I have even bid my price right away, just to force those with deep pockets to cough up more cash.

In the end, though, that just enriches the seller even more, which is a problem too...I think ebay really appeals to people who choose to misrepresent what they are selling. It's safe because few of us that have been financially raped will admit to paying what we did.

And then there is the problem of what certain things are worth in various places. Trees larger than 36" on the butt have never ever been more than about 2% of any harvest in my area, so saws above 5 cu in are a special order item with no trade-in value...expensive to buy new, impossible to get rid of used. That skews my thinking, for example. If I lived in the PNW, BC, or SE AK, they would be laying everywhere, with an established market.

I bought my 026 on ebay, and feel like I did very well...only thing I can figure is the guy ran it 'til the filter clogged the first time and auctioned it off...but I payed less than half new,so it wasn't that big a risk.Only disappointment was it had the EPA carb on it,but that's not too big a deal when they'd only been selling the fixed jet carb model for a year at the time!on the other hand there's a lot of junk floating around there too.I've tried to figure out why some auctions go so high, like an 034 that just sold for $400??,while others go for $50,makes no sense.

FWIW - I've been to auctions and watched items go for near or more than they could be bought new for. Tools, welders, and cutting torches always seem to get good prices. Must be the "gotta have it" mentality.

Holy Crap - $15 plus shipping for a freakin' patch? Where's the saw to go with it?!?!?! And it's not even April 1st!!!
