I looked at a dead elm tree a few weeks ago which had been a referral from another client. The homeowner knew the tree was going to be a PITA. I bid it high because I knew that I'd have to haul the wood about a half hour away to pay to dump it. I figured the cost to dump would have been roughly $200, plus paying some money to a buddy to have him truck it up there with his big trailer and FEL. So I was told the other day that I have the job. Well I was in the neighborhood today and stopped at the nursery which is right across the street from the house. I asked the owner if he'd take the chips... sure. So I was happy, even though I have other nearby dump spots... across the street is across the street. Then he said those words that I long to hear.... "I'll take the wood." He even offered to come over and get it himself.

Some years ago I was taking down a bunch of hemlocks, when the nextdoor neighbor (an older Jamaican lady) came over and said "I take de wood mon." She even sent her kids over to get it. I brought her a lot of junk over the next year or two.

I'll say this, it's nice to have chip and wood dump spots... but it's REALLY nice to find people who will take the junk.

I rarely take wood from a job unless it's palmate. A "Free Firewood" ad on craigslist gets me 10 calls easy, even for pine and whatnot.

For good hardwoods it's over 300 a cord out here so people take whatever they can get.

It is nice to have a windfall like that usually because people don't know how hard it is to split elm. Last week on the hottest day of the year we had just loaded all the up to 12 inch dia stuff that my furnace will take and were shot from the big dead elm removal over 2 houses. Bark and dead twigs just everywhere.

The lady comes home and looks at the 2 big logs left we are dreading to deal with and says I'll take those and you can put them back (about 200 yards) under that tree over there. "Ok well cut them up and put them over there".

"No you can put them there in full size".....damn what a nice surprise as the log truck was full. Dingo grappled both of the huge logs and in 2 trips drove them over there and dropped them under the tree. Why?.....who cares.:greenchainsaw:

Craigslist is AWESOME, I have a group of guys who will follow me from job to job, taking all of the wood! One guy sends his nephew, 6'5",17, ripped like Jesus! with a 3500 chevy dump truck and a 18' trailer, when he is waiting for the wood, the kid jumps in and helps with clean up! I just post where I am working!

"If you post it, they will come"

Sounds like you need to hire the kid.

I used to have a couple of guys who would follow me around and pick up all of my hardwoods. They had a 1 ton flatbed and their own saws. All I had to do was get it on ground and haul the brush, they would cut and load everything else. They sold it for firewood but I would still give them a tip for getting rid of it for me. It helped me out. I had a couple of other guys who had a pulpwood truck and would pick up my pines. I would tip them too because they would come a long way to pick up my wood and would often come even when I didn't have a full load. Again, it was a big help to me so I didn't mind throwing a good tip their way.
