How exactly does an temp gun measure bar oil quality?

Thanks for doing that experiment! I've often thought of doing it but too lazy. Good to know they run the same temp. I only use canola since several years, no problems, but you got to do preventative maintenance, clean out behind the clutch and strip down the oil pump once a year or so, before the oil and dust harden up. If you can keep on top of it, it's great stuff. The Canadians did a study on it and say it's fine. Link to study below.

I've used Crisco when cutting ice. Did not have a problem.
At one time I went the used oil trail, I quickly back tracked.
I was thinking the name brand treated me better than generic,
maybe I was thinking too much but seemed the name brand kept the saw cleaner.
I read on here of mixing STP, never thought of that or I would have tried that too.
I need bar oil now, it's not 4 a gallon here.

Well ,if you’ll notice in the OP, that was part of my question! And I think that is a good question!
But it seems to me that “less heat= less friction= less wear and tear”! Or the “same” heat = the same wear and tear” at a lower cost!?
Soo...everything I’ve read so far..(and watched videos on YouTube ) seem to point in the direction that vegetable oil is at least as good, if not better, than petroleum oil! (With the exception of keeping the 0iler unclogged!)
So, what all does that include?? How much trouble or how difficult would that be? What the best way to do that?
Buying a pack of oilers and installing one once a year or two, or every six months??
How hard is that on ms170’s and ms250’s??
I’m not necessarily advocating the use of veg oil....
But...if it is cheaper and it works, without too much hassle, then why not?

Well....AT THE VERY LEAST...you can use just about any kind of oil..until you can get what you’re comfortable with..it looks like!

One I really like right now is that Mesquite charcoal filtered “Longbranch”! (The one that Matthew McCaugnahey helped come up with)
And fer a bottom shelf stuff, “JTS Brown (Bottled in Bond)” is worth trying!! (But has to be the 100 proof bottled in bond) The regular 80 proof isn’t very good! ((That’s the bourbon that Paul Newman mentioned on the ‘ol movie, “The Hustler”!

I tend towards Evan Williams myself. Tried a number through the years and seems to be where I've settled.
I used stihl bio-oil in my CSM as I wanted to use the sawdust as mulch.
I busted a leg and that saw sat for two years. The stuff the sawdust/oil turned into was harder than 3 year old asphalt pavement. It took an hour to pry the chain out of the bar, then I tossed the chain as there was no way to free up the links.
I tried PB Blaster, acetone, ATF, kerosense/diesel, gasoline, paint thinner....... Chain was junk. The crud also rotted/removed the paint on the cases.
On the plus side, if you bring a frying pan to work, you can use it to cook a burger/steak for lunch.

Yes leg is fine. But both bones in lower leg. I had a choice of a cast to my hip for 6 months or a metal insert inside the bigger bone. I went for the insert and could sort of walk with a brace 3 months later. I can run, jump, or do what I want to now.
The rest of the bio-oil red squirrels got at the gallon, I should have put some rat poison in it, they went after the gas tank on my string trimmer next.
When I grill during the summer, I load up my pellet rifle and any varmint I see when cooking or eating gets to be "crowfu". I saw a woodchuck last week, before I got close enough, he tried to run across the street, where he came from. But got flattened on the way buy a friendly PU truck driver. Sometimes things work out O.K. ........
I got away from bourbons and into single malts, Bushmills or McCallans.

I do like a good strong IPA with plenty of hops. Founders Centennial is a good choice
