Bar/Chain Thoughts...hp/weight ratios?

I have one Jonsy 2050, hopefully have 2 running soon. I have full compliment 20" on one, and it seems to have a little trouble when I sink the whole bar in a big log. So I'm thinking 20" with full skip for the other 2050. I wanna keep both 20" for interchangeability and use one for big logs and one for limbing. I like 20" so I can "reach out and cut something" :D That and the ratio of bar to saw just "looks" right :D

After I try the second 2050 with full skip, I'll decide whether or not to get another bigger saw. When I do, I wanna run around 28-36". If I ran a saw where say 28" is the smallest bar for it, would full comp cut more/faster than say 36" or whatever is the longest with full skip? Kinda like, bigger saw, smaller bar, saw would be heavier, but bar would be lighter, shorter, easier to handle? I'm learning, tossing ideas around...what yalll say?

What kind of HP to bar inches you guys like?

to complement your Jred 2050, I'd go for a 2095 as my big saw, it'll definately handle the 28" bar easily, so I figure you could run as much as a 38" on that without much trouble, given the 7hp or so, plus a muffler mod, and it would probably SCREAM.

Yah wouldn't mind keeping in the Jred family. Like Jred and Husqy due to the Turbo air cleaning. Jreds little harder to get parts for but i'm a "buy a parts saw and fix it myself" kinda guy, so maybe that's not a big deal.

Working on a graph/chart of all the saws in the cc range i'm looking at with all the specs lined out to compare. I'm still quite curious sbout hp/inch ratios you guys like.

20" bar on jred 2050 is simply too much bar I would say.
It will be a lot happier with a 16" one, or shorter.

The 20" will slow the cutting down even in smaller wood.

Would full skip help? Or maybe I should say how much would it help?

How about my other Q? Hp/weight ratios? If 20" is a little much, I pretty much need to look for another saw. Noticed the manufacturers rate the saws for less bar than some others. Say 6-7 hp and about 32"? Or ccs/inches?

Haha, well I got a little Husky 51 and with just a muffler mod and carb re-adjust to make sure its turning its max, 12.5k, rpm it flat rips with a 20" bar. Been cutting alot of soft wood but a fair bit of oak too so anyway that 20" on a 50cc saw works ok for me. Also on my 372 with just muffler mod it rips with a 28" and I think I'm going to order on of those Oregon Powermax Plus reduced weight bars in a 32" to see how it turns that, I think it will do great. I would think if you want to run a 36" on any kinda regular basis you will want at least a 85-95cc saw slightly modded. Also I think a 28" full comp should out cut a 36" with full skip if you have a saw able to keep the chain speed up when you lean on it. Anyway I did alot of cuttin on the Pines fire down there in the Julian area in 2002 I think it was, man there is some big timber in that area I had no idea San Diego had any forests like that, well till Fire Season 2003 that is. Take care, Tom.

NEVERMIND YALL, JUST FORGET IT...I DON'T NEED ANY HELP FIGURING OUT WHAT/HOW BIG A SAW I NEED...

....cuz I just won a newish 395XP on Ebay. WOOOOOOOOT! YEAH! :D

EDIT: still interested in hp/cc to bar inch ratios!

Hi Tom, you are oh so right about the big timber. The funny thing is some people live their whole life in San Diego and NEVER go to Palomar or Cuyamacas or Lagunas. Especially ifthey dont go to 6th grade camp up there.

This past summer on Palomar an Fir (A. concolor)that was 4+feet in diameter 30 feet from the rootwad fell and took out about a half-dozen other trees over 36 inch dbh. The two forks of the fir were both about 30 inches at the fork.

One of the trees was an oak that was 5 feet diameter just below a fork. Fork was about 15-20 feet from rootwad. It took my partner and I 2 five hour shifts and help from 2 other crew members and a griphoist to get it off the trail/reroute the trail a little. Palomar area is about a mile high, about 30 miles from the ocean, and gets about 40 inches of ppt a year.

We had lots of P. lambertiana with dbh over 5 feet burned in lots of places by the Cedar fire. (I think the record for P.lamb. is 19 feet dbh and 240 feet tall-source Conifers of California by Lanner.)Some of the old conifers and Black, canyon, and coast live oaks that burned in Cuyamaca SP were magnificent. Not quite as majestic as Calveras Big trees SP, but a close second. And only 15 trailmiles from the desert floor of Anza Borrego Desert SP!

techdave, you ever been to A+B saw in Lakeside? I like 'em, and the guy has a good name too - David :-D I went in there to kill time and he let me fool with his new huskies to see what mine was gonna be lik. Nice feller. Also talked a little about tuning, which I prolly need to start another thread on and/or research to make sure I'm not messing up my saws. Specially my nice big (expensive) 395.

Should I be able to bog the 395 with a 30"?

Holy Crap!

You live in Oak Harbor? I was born in Coupeville, grew up in the woods between the two. What's it like there these days, haven't been up in a couple years although my dad still lives up there.

Small world ain't it. I was born in Puyallup, and lived in Orting until High school was over. Joined the Navy and they keep sending me here. Join the Navy and see the world. Yea right. I've been in for 19 years and have spent 15 of it right back here in Washington. What can I say but Oak Harbor is just.... Oak Harbor.
