Heys Guys, what are the reccomendations on Bar oils? Have you found any advantages one over another. I started with warren a fews years back. The last couple years I have been using Echo (red dye easy to see) and Husky. The price usually runs around two and a half to three bucks a gallon on a good day. What do you think?

you guys are goign to shoot me but i use straight 30wt oil in my saw. we buy it by the 5 gallon pail on the farm. i have had no problems with it at all.

used both husky and stihl (friend had some as i wouldn't pay the extra ... )- both seem to work fine, dont like non bar oil cos it does not carry to the bottom of the chain as well as the thick bar oil but it all seems to sling off the tip when running full revs in the cut...$3.50 per gallon here for the husky bar oil.

Am I crazy, or what?

Call me nuts if you want, but I use Stihl BioPlus environmentally friendly lubricant. Its just over $20 for a 5-liter jug. This is a personal thing with me. I feel its my small part in the effort to keep our world clean. You know, if we all started using this stuff, the price would drop considerably. Anyone up for the challenge? :blob4: :blob1: :blob2:

as always with stihl products: you are paying too much. its great to be environmentally friendly - but why dont you do it with the normal husky bar & chain oil you dont have to break the bank while doing so - its made from sunflower seed oil..and like said before $3.50 / gallon =3.79liters

this is a whopping .92cents per liter
stihl price that you stated: just over $20 for a 5-liter jug
comes to: $4.00 per liter (makes me sick - the fully synthetic mobil1 that i use in my truck costs the same)

the only challenge is for stihl to make their prices realistic and start selling their stuff over the internet.

am proud of you for you post tundraotto,I liked that one.
If I could buy bc oil here for 3.50 gal I would be happy. It seem everyone want about 4.00 to 4.25.
I dont want to get the oil thing started again but I have been using motor oil all winter.I will keep everyone updated on bar and chain wear.I have been watching one logging co. here that has been using used motor oil for at least 15 years and I cant see any premature bar or chain wear.
The only reason that I am using the motor oil is that I bought 20 gal at a auction and it came out to about 10 cents a quart.

I'm not thrilled about paying $4/liter for oil, but its the only thing my dealer can get. I know the Husky Pro Forest oil is made from sunflower seeds. It was about $18/gallon, but its not available here. I think they stopped making it due to lack of demand. I'm pretty sure Husky's regular bar oil is petroleum based. Does anyone know for sure?

yess Brett - had the catalog right in front of me yesterday when i posted: THE NORMAL/REGULAR HUSKY BAR & CHAIN OIL IS MADE FROM SUNFLOWER SEED OIL - and it costs $3.50/gallon so there. FOR SURE!

Tundraotto, I didnt take the time to look on the internet, but do you know if Husky has the stuff you say on their website. Its not that I dont trust you, I just want to read it for myself. This would be great for Treeman14, you could save up for a new truck the next year without using the Stihl oil. :D

I do praise the Treeman, for being crazy. I think you will find it hard to get anyone to be up for the challenge. These guys are cheap on here!!!

As far as using 30wt Andrew, I find it doesnt stick to the chain as well as actual bar oil.

How about the guys that use old motor oil? Now that is cheap. I used to have tree companies buy our old oil when I was a dealer. I loved getting his saws in with wore out oilers in for repair. Now Treeman is this called recycling???

I don't know? It reminds me of the old Irishman who promised to pour a fifth of fine whiskey over his buddies grave... After filtering it through his own kidneys, of course.

Have you thought about where all this bar oil goes? It doesn't just disappear.

I couldn't find any info about oil on the Husky website. Tundraotto, I'll have to see that to believe it. No offense.

Guys,

The Pro Forest is a different oil than the "standard." The Pro Forest is made from vegetable oil, but the regular Husky stuff is still made from petroleum.

I misunderstood you. I thought you said the cheap Husky oil was made from sunflowerseed oil. Only the Pro Forest is. The cheapy stuff is still non biodegradable.

I know we are trying to do our best on helping the enviroment, and I guess every little bit helps, but I dont think my little bar oil is going to make a lot of difference. Have there been studies to show how bad reg bar oil pollutes the soil?

Hi there all...new here....I am glad someone pointed out the difference in the two, the Pro forest is available here in Canada, but at the price of 22.00 plus....regular b/c oil is still over 6 bucks here.....I think that is 50 cents american though...

Darin,

How much bar oil have you used over the years? 20 gallons, 50 gallons, 100 gallons???

Now, let's assume you were to take that same amount of oil and just dump it out on the ground. Are you polluting?

I realize when you use a saw, the oil is released slowly over a large area, but does that make it OK?

How much bar oil is used nationwide? ALL OF IT ends up in the environment.

You're, right. Your little bar oil is not going to make a difference. But that attitude is part of the problem. When you multiply your little bit of oil by thousands or millions of users, there IS a problem. You contradict yourself when you say that every little bit helps, but you refuse to do your little bit. "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."
