I had an 066 that had the 2 port muffler. I ran a 42" with full skip chain with no problem. On the newer 660 I think a muffler mod would help.

First thing i always when i get a new saw is open up the Muffler. :blob2:

Good deal!!! On the 660 just make sure that you work the inner baffle too, that is where much of the restriction is as well as the lousey 3/8's port that they put on there.

Will a 36" be good enough for what you are doing? Also is this a one shot deal? Meaning........will this bar stay on the saw???

I really need a 42" bar it would stay on the saw just only used when needed. I have a 32" that stays on a 046.It only gets used about once a week. What we have been taking down lately a Larger bar would really be nice! :blob2:

The little stihl pocket guide shore don't help much, does it? MS 660 16-36" I run a 36" on my 046 (full comp) without much trouble except oiling in very dry/dead wood. If a 66 couldn't pull a 42" , sumptins wrong IMO

16" to 36" is what Stihl recommends for the saw because that's the range of lengths they make with that bar mount.

I've never tried anything close to 48" with my 066 so I cannot comment on the saw's ability with that much, but I'd sure think if I was to want a four foot bar on a saw and that's all I'd ever use on it, I'd be looking for an 088.

I Like to cut from 1 side! But i have taken some down here recently that 36" would barely reach across When stumping the tree. :blob2:

al is a great guy. very up to speed on everything. i had to call him a few times. he did an outstanding job to make sure everything was correct. very knowledgeable man. i think all the stihl dealers around here know him.
if he was not sure which bar it would take, he would have the correct information in seconds. marty

IMO, it all boils down to what you would say is "productive". I used to run a 42" bar on 66s for the occasional big one(softwood) and it needs the 7 tooth sp. If your talking hardwoods I would think it would be fine for occasional cuts but if your making run after run of bar buried cuts regularly that you would want something bigger.
