How many bars and chains have you worn out on one power head? For example; I have worn out 3, 20 inch bars and 1, 16 inch bar on my 550. I have also gone through about 20 chains.

5 chains per Bar?

Dude,
You know than other tanks that you don't put gas in, it's for oil. :blob2: Did you know there are tools to keep your bars in shape? Tips can be replaced and bars can be reworked.

But rally, you should be getting a lot more use pre bar.:)

So far, I've yet to wear out a bar myself, chains are a different story, I've gone through about 10-30 of those on some of my smaller stuff.

Yeah on the 550 I went through about 5 chains per bar. Then stopped getting the cheap bars for lowes (non replacible noses) and got quality bars from Baileys. I also used to run drain oil in all my saws and i stoped doing that. My dealer talked me into only using cain lub. I really feel that chain lub makes chains, bars, and sprockets last longer. I have about 10 chains through the bar on the 359 and i have never replaced the nose of the bar. I was going to use it until it froze up.

I've damaged a few bars, but can't say I've every actually "completely" worn one out. I grind the rails now and then, usually don't bother to close them up, and replace the odd tip. Keep the oil up, don't cut dirt, keep the rails true (like chains, a little touch up now and them makes a big difference in longevity).

I get a lot of customers that think they want their bars replaced, and mostly talk them out of it. $18 for a FULL bar grind and tune is a lot better than $50for a new bar.

For some reason, everyone knows about sharpening chains, but most consumers are oblivious of the need for a bar grind. How many of you that ski would throw out the skis when they need the edges and bases tuned?
