I have tried it, Erik. I talked about it in a previous thread. I prefer a little more friction. I do use a rigging pulley to get to the top of huge trees, but that's about it.
I've also tried the splitail, Nick made me one. It's cool, but I'm a simple man.

just a thought........instead of girth hitching the biner in the splice to prevent cross loading, the biner can be held in place with a rubber o ring. petzl makes a little rubber piece for their quick draws so the biner stays straight.

the screamers( like a quick draw) i use for ice climbing have a sloppy biner hole so it's common to hold the biner in place with a rubber o ring or rubber band from your broccoli
