Sharpened hundreds of chain at a dealership, two grinders and instructed to not move anything! I now bought a 511ax, and wanting to get extra income from my current ocupation when out of season. Im all good except the 10 degree angle and when to use it! Always Full chisel time? Im an oregon dealer so that info is clear, but i live in a STIHL area and they always say straight cut but it just dont look correct. When i sharpen a STIHL chisel chain it looks like i used a square file on it from the profile! and my wheel is deffinatly round and profiled. as with tilt angle 10 it looks like you could easily cut into link straps? or tilt it the more obviouse way? very un-cleare information in the manual. ijust want to know for myself that i gave my customer the best i could do. cuz thats all we have to offer!

As far as I know the 511ax will not grind a true square cut chain. The 10deg swivel of the base is to clear the tie strap. 50-60 deg tilt is the head angle coming into the cutter top plate. 30-35 deg for the cut across the top plate ( i have never tried a straight cut across ).
I do not think Oregon even has a Square chain grinder in it's line.

Silvey makes 3 models and I think one other mfg. These only grind Sq. so are pricey in 2 respects pocket book and Limited use.

Perhaps you are confusing a square corner chain vs/ the semi or rounded corner type

Oregons manual of grind angles is by the type of chain, not what the 511ax is capable of doing or not doing.

Properly grinding true square cut chain is a developed skill. I have seen a lot of half ass attempts at it even with a true square chain grinder.
99.9% of customers will be well served by the angles I mentioned above
I make my living as a professional sharpener, as such I sharpen close to a 1000 chains a year this includes tree services. In my area I have not seen any of the services using true square chain, as designated by the type on the drive links.

I have a oregon 511ax with the hydraulic clamp. I only use stihl chains.

I set my head tilt angle to 65 degrees

My bed angle is 25 degrees, -25 degrees

I offest the table 10, -10 while grinding.

All these angles can very, depending on what type of wood you are sawing. Each type of wood likes a little different angle.

I got these angles by matching the angles on a brand new stihl chain. I get the chains as sharp as factory.

I have searched through the site looking for Stihl chain angles, thought I'd try just asking. What angles do you use for stihl RS chain and RM chain. Apparently Stihl recommends 30/60 for RSC; 30/75 for RMC. I have been using 30/60 for all my Stihl chain. Any thoughts or comments about advantages or disadvantages of grinding angles?

My limited opinion, 30/60 just fine for most all general purpose work, I have one or two customers that prefer a more square ( across the width) angle, if you look at the top of the cutter the ( on most anyway) is a witness mark. This gives you the reference angle across the width as well as when to give up on that chain( minimum length). As always some of these comments about angles is dependent on the type of wood, and the specific use. A long thin cutting edge will not last long same with a real pointy corner on full chisel. When I am out bucking I am not interested in changing out or filing a chain every 15 minutes.

Bed Angle

I noticed that the Stihl bench mount sharpener dont have a bed angle adjustment at all. For a 10* grind tilt. Sure wish i woulda grabbed more of all them free booklets from training seminars. I have been very happy with the 511ax so far!
