Been getting one of the AS members off the ground for the last few days. We actually met up in person for the first time on Friday for lunch. He had a New Tribe saddle with him that had been acquired in used condition. I gave it a pretty good lookover and looks like it has hardly been used. It should be OK for learning. We went over to the shop where I can suspend a line, and he actually got a chance to go up about 5 ft and hang in the saddle.
On Saturday, I drove down to his place and helped him and his dad drop a very dead 30" Red Oak. I had to climb it to drop some weight off the backside, and remove a fairly large side branch to clear another tree. We rigged a pull line with a couple pulleys, and used a small tractor to make sure it went where we wanted.
Today, we went over to a friends place and played in a 60-70' Magnolia tree. He was able to up around 40' and seemed to do pretty well for his first time.
It was kinda nice just climbing for fun. I haven't been able to do much tree work the last 13 months due to my wrist getting broken in a car wreck. It is bugging me a bit as I type this....we will see how bad it gets tonight.

The reason for the post, reminding others that it can be fun to climb a tree just for pleasure.

That's what the member "yoyoman" does. Your reminder might be especially beneficial for folks who are resentful that he has the sheer gall and audacity to post on Arboristsite.

Sorry, wasn't trying to upset anybody. I guess I haven't read many of his posts. It has just been a while since I was in a tree for other than work. Forgot how much fun it could be.

Thanks rick for taking me under your wing. I did have fun yesterday. I was kinda bummed when we had to leave. Sorry to hear that your wrist is hurting you again. Might want to see if a wrist brace hinders you in a tree. It might help to keep the pain off the day after you get out of the tree.

Different injury, but do you sleep with a wrist brace? It may help. I started to when I had carpal tunnel and it made a huge difference. A lot of times a person will bend their wrists pretty bad when they are sleeping which cuts off circulation and also cause inflammation. The brace keeps that from happening. I found that even a flexible wrap helps a lot.

Just pop 20 or 30 oxy cotins, and it wont hurt a bit. Good on ya for teaching the way of the force. I would love to do more req climbing. Still have a dream of climbing Hyperion, all 379ft of it!

I hate painkillers! They gave me a prescription at the ER after the accident. I didn't get it filled till after 6 days of almost no sleep. Turned out I had also broken my Sternum. That 10 day prescription was enough for me to adjust to the pain.

379' !!!!! That would be enough to forget about my wrist for a while. Must be a nice view.

Its funny, I now look at trees thinking which one would be fun to climb. By the way I'm the one VA-sawyer is teaching to climb. He is even giving me homework . He gave me a list of the types of trees we are going to be pruning on out next job. I have to study up on how to prune them this time of the year. I'm going to start keeping a note book on the different types of trees.

Do your homework!
You are fortunate to have a good mentor, even if he is kinda obsolete. :D

Pot, meet Kettle! I think you are almost as old as I am.
I'm not obsolete, just on the injured reserve list.

Two short afternoons of climbing.......and three nights of poor sleep so far due to wrist pain. A fair trade in my book.

It's not as much the vintage, but the mileage!
Hope your wrist situation can get remedied.
A chest roller box could mebbe help take some of the load off your arms/wrists while climbing(?).

Count me in.(climbing Hyperion, not popping 20 Oxys)

That would be pretty damn cool. Chilaxing in one of those tents that hang from a branch, over looking all the baby 300ft trees! Lets do it, we will have to sneak in tho, Dr Sillette, dont like no outsiders up in dem.

Oh I can Ninja with the best of them, My favorite fishing holes are all on restrictive land. Might be the only arrest that would look good on a resume if we got caught," yes I was busted once for climbing a 375 ft redwood".
But climbing a 300 footer is one of my dreams

Have you tried climbing with a foot ascender? If you're on a traditional system doubled rope with a hitch and you don't footlock (I can't) then your wrist is copping a hell of a time. With a foot ascender, your arms are taking it easy. All you gotta do is advance the prusik. Or get a pulley and then just pick your nose on the way up. Gives your abs quite a workout though!
