I have a potted White Pine that's about 6' tall and has been in the pot longer than I want to confess to. What should I do to give it the best chance to survive in the ground?

Excellent article. The only thing I would add is, especially in clay soils, dig a square hole, not a round one. Roots follow the path of least resistance, and a square hole actually gives them a point to punch into the native soil, whereas a round hole can encourage them to just circle around.

II like the square hole idea. What if really soak it and wash all the dirt off? Then try to get the roots un-balled and then quick plant it?
