Hi guys hope things are well. Did this today. The wood was layed out great on the hill. I want to thank my neighbor for giving me this walnut. (it's nice to have good people to live by.) Still have more to mill. 36" pin oak and some more small walnut crotch pieces next weekend. 2+ gallons of gas and 1 gallon of bar oil.I really need to start using canola oil.I don't think it was a bad day for a one man show.
Enjoy N8

Wow. That is some beautiful wood. I Walnut is probably one of the best things I'll be able to find around here. That gives me hope.

Great work.

Nice score on the walnut! I never get tired of finding out what's inside a log. That pin oak sounds like an ambitious project. Big and tough wood-- it will put you and the saw to the test. Looking forward to photos.

Yellowbeard, if you find some walnut and want it cut on a band saw mill, drop me a line. I live near Neosho, MO.

Wow. Thanks! Actually, my family has 135 right outside of Green Forest, AR. I was thinking that if I cut down any of the walnut up there that I needed to track down a band saw mill. Don't want to waste all that wood.

I'm sure we can work something out. The Norwood mill is portable, so we can cut either your place or mine. PM me whenever you're ready.

I imagine it will be a while before I get that ambitious, but I've made a note of this thread for the future. Glad to know you're out there.

I love milling walnut. Maybe its just me but, there is a slightly nutty smell that lingers when i mill it... It's awsome! By the way dave, i look forward to more sawmill and woodlot articles. If you will be at the next paul bunyun show i'll introduce myself. Here is a few pictures of some of my setup for a csm.

pastryguy i cut that slab in half. both sides will make cool coffee tables.....someday!

Nato, looks like a lot of thought went into the chain saw mill-- and it has been through a lot of wood. Very impressive stacks of wood in the barn! Hope to meet you at the Paul Bunyan show-- I shouldn't be hard to find.

Ironicaly enough my wife drives for ups and she gets a discount. I don't know how much of one but it is something. I'm shure it still wouldn't be cheep. Just for the hell of it what is your zip there and i'll find out a little more about prices to ship something like this slab size to you. Just please be sitting down when i reply with the price to ship!

It's 96704. My friend ships things for me through FedEx. He gets a 50% discount so as long as the total dimensions don't get past a certain number it's not too bad. We're kind of used to paying a lot for shipping out here. It's the price we pay for living way out in the middle of the Pacific.

I work for UPS also, almost 28 years, unfortunately the only service we have to the "Big Island" is "Air Service". Don't know if you can do it Second Day Air or Next Day Saver, that would save a few bucks. My friend at the customer counter is looking up the price for a 4'X2'X3" package weighing 40 pounds, just for a guestamate, Joe.

OK, my friend at the customer counter just called back and to ship a package 4'X2'X3" weighing 40 pounds would be $192.88 from Baltimore MD to 96704. That's the standard price, I'm not signed up for the UPS discount yet, and she said it is a pretty good discount, Joe.

Be careful about shipping walnut slabs! The walnut thousand cankers disease has hitchiked in walnut slabs into several parts of the native growing area of black walnut, and is a very real threat to the survival of the species Here is a link . As a walnut grower, I have to take this very seriously, and ask that walnut slabs not be transported unless they have been heat treated. We have already forgotten what a chestnut tree looks like, due to the blight, and we have lost most of our elms, and are losing ash trees by the millions, all due to exotic insects and fungi. Don't let this happen to our walnut trees!

Dave THANK YOU for your insight. I will read your posted link to better inform myself. All the lumber I have has not been through a kiln. Do you know if a solar kiln would get hot enough to do the job? (Building a solar kiln is on the to do list for later this summer).

Rarefish my wife has 16 in as of now. She just had her "tune up" knee surgery. Jumping in and out of trucks for 9+ hours a day isn't easy on a man let alone a woman. She's a tuff chick though. Thank god for good health care.
