So I was having problems the other day trying to get my 065 started, took it to the shop, mech tells me its done! needs new piston&rings, I ask him what happened, He tells me that he has never seen a carb so packed with dust. Long story, short version, my EX foreman was not cleaning the saws all the way, and then he was trying to force a cut thru some big meat, I seen him, told him he needed to stop and change the dam chain, had no idea that while he was doing this, creating pixie dust instead of ribbons, all the dust was being sucked into the carb, dust was preventing the oil in the mix from getting to the cylinder, end result, dead $1000.00 saw:chainsaw: $270.00 in parts, don't know the labor yet.
what kills me, the idiot that did it, I had already fired a few days before, I usually don't touch the big one as I am very small it kills my already dead shoulders, so I didn't realize all this until after he was gone, He keeps calling wanting his job back. I think I might hire him back, just so I can fire him again for lying to me about the maintenance of the saws. So know I am paranoid about the rest of them, my 200t is good, as I am the only one who cleans it, but what about the rest that he was responsible for? How long did they go before I ripped into them to check, all dirty behind the filter:cry: This is the same thing as telling a guy to grease the truck and he puts a dab of grease on the zirt so when I look, it looks completed. Dirtbag

And a dull chain will heat the motor up when working also. You need some good people good luck I know the feeling.

Bottom line here is....YOU, the owner should always do the maintenance or have someone qualified to do the maintenance, if you knew they put a dollup of grease on the fittings so you would think they did what was asked of them then why would you trust them to do any cleaning/prevent maint.?

I understand your frustration/anger...BUT, ultimately its your equipment, your biz, etc.. if you want it done right.....well you know the rest!

LXT..........

Anyone who is stupid enough to try to cut with a dull saw like that is not foreman material... Hell, they're not even groundie material.

I'd try to stick with experienced hands when it comes to running saws and ropes. My rope and saw man has been doing it for 20 years. He may not be setting the ground on fire getting wood on the truck but I can count on him to run the ropes and saws.

Trust, but verify. When i ran a "department" I would give the guys OT to do the PM's. Then I could stop in and see what they were doing in the evenings. Everything from trucks to hand/pole saw blades. Give them a task, then check parts of it.

You were an NCO, Scott, you should know the drill by heart

Trust given too freely only leads to disappointment.

I would like to mention that cleaning the air filters, blowing dust off the saw, and installing sharp chains will not prevent dust from getting in the carburetor.

If you are getting dust down the throat of your carburetor you need to replace the filters and make sure that the seals around the edges are keeping the dust out.

a common error is to use forced air to blow the dust out of the filters. Unfortunately, this often leads to the forced air blowing holes in the air filters, thereby allowing dust past the air filter into the carburetor. Some air filters tolerate blowing air through them better than others. Paper air filters invariably allow dust through if you are in the habit of blowing them clean.

I never had it in me to hire a bunch of guys to run my saws and equipment.

The dollop trick!!!?? You know to me that seems like more work than just pumping it in.

This is the same thing as telling a guy to grease the truck and he puts a dab of grease on the zirt so when I look, it looks completed. Dirtbag

thats insanity
how hard is it to pump the handle a few times to actually squirt some grease in the zerk ?
anyone who could be so lazy as to take a dallop of grease and smear it on the end of the zerk is a total loser and doesnt deserve a job at walmart

yeah & knowing that your employee would do such........you then expect him to properly maintain saws & other gear, to me this is owner stupidity!!! IDK maybe it was a second chance or something, BUT..cmon, who would trust someone like that?

WHOA! First I would like to let you know, this guy is very experienced, why he did what he did, I don't have the answer. The very reason I fired him was his "instant" failure in performance, I fired him on a Friday, realized the saw was jacked on Monday, I did not fire him because of the saw, rather the complete breakdown in his dependability, JPS, you are right "Inspect what you expect" is the term. And I do,which lead to his dismissal, the grease zert thing was an example or a comparison to what he did. I am perfectly aware on how to clean a saw, thanks for the advice though;), Wasn't looking for advice, was venting frustration over a guy who has been with me for a while now, that completely shut down any faith I had in him. Not sure what happened, not my problem, I am not in the business of solving the personal issues of my guys, if they have them, DO NOT BRING THEM TO WORK, He did, he was let go. He was a highly skilled goundie, WHICH IS THE VERY REASON I WAS VENTING, he new what he was doing was wrong, but didn't care, and that is the problem, again I repeat myself, dude is now in the DIRTBAG file.
The mistake I made was trusting him,as it absolutely lead to disappointment.:bang:
To call me stupid, that was ignorant.

now you got it you cant trust people you have to watch and be there otherwise it will not go the way you want.

I had one no show on me yesterday. I had to have two men to do this job because I need a tag line and lowering line in every piece. I had to call it until this morning. Guy has been with me over two years. I was furious yesterday but I am more puzzled this morning than anything at his behavior. He's never done anything like this before. Said he was on his way when I talked to him on the phone then two hours later he was still nowhere to be found. I called him again and got a text from him saying that he would call me. My thoughts are if he could take the time to text me then he could take the time to call me and let me know what's going on... Not sure what I'm going to do. I hate to get rid of a guy that's been with me for over two years for a first time ####up. Gonna have to wait and see what he says. I owe him $150 so I'm sure he'll be in touch. Some time off may be in order for him.

I'm confused.. so he didnt show today either?

I refuse to take text messages from my people. Texting always mean they don't want to talk to me, because they know I will cross-exam and find out the truth.

My guess: drunk, or worse. Easily detected in a phone call.

Lol. I started texting my last two workers. Who wants to try and talk to an American born puerto rican that's 27 years old, and still trys to act like he no speaky the english - at 6:30 am. The other one just exuded so much gay creepy-ness, that I didn't really want to deal with him on the phone either (or in person, for that matter)..

There has been some late season restructuring of the workforce going on around here the last few weeks.

Those hard working folks that have intermittent "no speaky the english" problems are easily cured of their occasional language problems: "If you can't do what I tell you, then you need to go home."

When they begin to ask you for more hours, more money, etc, that's when you tell them they would be worth more if they could understand you all the time, instead of only when they wanted to.

Just a couple of trips home and their understanding of english becomes much more reliable. It's not like there is a shortage of workers in the labor pool right now.

He didn't show up yesterday. I called in another guy to do the job today.

He had sent me two text messages early this morning apologizing and saying he was sorry he ####ed up. He tried calling at 8:30 this morning after I was already in the tree so I didn't answer. I took his call after I finished the job. I told him he can pick up his pay tomorrow after I finish working. He offered to come in tomorrow and work for free. I told him not to worry, I had all the help I needed. Gonna make him wait another day on his money and ponder what I told him. Also let him know that I don't need him to do my work. I've been doing this 20 years without him.

I'm not going to fire him, I'm just going to give him a little time to think.

This guy is a veteran who has done three tours of combat duty. He's been to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once. I think he deserves another chance. He just needs a time out.

You are a good man.
Tell him to reach down and grab ahold! He should respond to that!
Vet or not, he should be very humbled if you let him comeback, if he is not.......see ya
