Went to look at some tree service equipment today and bought a new in the bag 150' rope from the guy for $50. Looks like good rope but I'm wanting to know some specs on it like who makes it and tensile strength.
Its packaged by Baileys, Blue Max. product code # 12BL 150. Rope is white with a blue stripe. I have never had a 12 strand rope but I think this is 12. I have only used 16 strand. Does not have a core like my 16 strand has. I'm thinking its comparable to arbor-plex or true blue. Any info on this rope would be helpful. This rope is not listed on Baileys web site, also looked in some of there books. Is this stuff any good.
Take a look at it.

Carl, Nothing like Safety Blue. It is very likely "ArborPlex" made in a special run for Bailey's. Grande Dog can tell us- David, you might want to stick this on the Bailey's forum so that he notices it. I actually like 12 strand ropes but they aren't everyone's favorite. I've been climbing on some Columbia Ropes' 12 strand. Kenn (Outonalimb) was over climbing for me on Friday and nicked his line so he used mine on the second tree-I don't think he liked it much-too stretchy for efficient footlocking or body thrusting up a tall tree.

It really aint like saftey blue (use a 200' piece for rigging), however it does look somewhat like saftey pro or arbor plex, I have never fondled arbor plex though.

Saftey pro's strands have a totally diffent lay than this does.

Hmmm...never seen arbor-plex but it sure looks like it according to pictures I seen. I just want to know the specs before I do anything with this rope. It will most likely end up being a lowering line. I'm thinking for $50 I didn't get hurt at all for 150' hank.
Maybe one of the moderators can move this thread to Baileys forums.

This thread is a historical marking point for me. I'm glad that I took the time to read through.

Some of you have never even seen ArborPlex? That's amazing. And great at the same time.

When I speak to a group of arbos I like to find out their background. The questions will start at finding out who started climbing on natural fiber ropes on up to what friction hitch they used when they started climbing.

Now there's another marker, who hasn't seen Aplex...

hey,
it looks like arbor plex, I have not used it quite along time 10 yrs plus, when i first started, it is what we climbed on, and then when it was used up, it was retiired to a drop line.
we were told by the old guys we where lucky, they climed on manilla rope there sadles were doubble bolinis (sp) on a bite etc...

the rope is really has to much strech to it, iwhat its good for is ropeing down a dead elm so it does not shatter, but at 5780 # as my memory serves me its not
very strong.

play safe

Strength has gone up but it was originally 5400 lbs tensile.-"Not very strong". Double average manila, but I'm sure you can pop it between your hands!

Ah, yes I started on manilla & hemp with a taughtline. If the 1/2" got wet it would swell up and feel like 3/4" and it would leave you with splinters if you did or didn't wear gloves. It took awhile to break it in to where it wouldn't spin you around and leave splinters like it did when it was new. Any time you put a load on it it would spin and too much load and it would snap. About the time you got the rope in shape to run smooth (relax) it was time to replace it and start over again. ArborPlex with the prussic or blakes. Step up to the world of synthetics, no more natural fibers and you traded off splinters for rope burns. I like the Blue Streak myself but there are guys out there pushing for the thinner lighter ropes 11mm and smaller. I'd rather have todays ropes than manilla, they hold more and last longer. A mark in history, Tom, we're getting up there in years. Have you planted more trees than you've taken down?

I've planted a few and removed a few too. In my wake, most of the trees were in better shape after than before. I quit taking trees down for the money a number of years ago. Before that I subscribed to the customer's always right syndrome. Not any more, the customer has some say but it has to be best for the tree.

Up there in years, I guess so  51!

started out on hemp, manila and sissal. bowline on a bight. silver streakstreak 'fanno'.taughtline hitch,no hooks. 650 pioneer climbing saw. We,ve come a long way since then. First synthetic was esterlon lots of stretch. Didn,t like the feel of arborplex it was kinda square shaped also had green stripes in it. Great site . hooks

Blue-Max was manufactured by Samson and was the predecessor to their True-Blue. It has a the same characteristics and specifications as the True-Blue. It's a 12 strand weave of 100% polyester with the Samthane coating. It's .085 lbs. per foot and has an average breaking strength of 7300 lbs.

I definately didnt like that mushy stuff of yours. It worked in a pinch but like you said its really stretchy, my Distal bit into it to much and I kinda like havin that spliced eye. Remind me to always carry an extra climb line when ever I come down there. I love the Yale XTC fire, but Im climbing on my back up Pro Spec untill my new one comes in, At least now I have a 50ft rope for small ornamentals now.
