If your dead set on burning coal get a stove that's designated to burn coal .
I'm sure with some hunting you'll find something in your local area in the classifieds via FB or CL
I think you'd be much happier.

Here is a picture of what my grate looks like, I might be able to fab some sort of shaker grate for it.

Maybe I should consider wood pellets?

Those grates are to big ...most of the coal would fall through the spaces .
These are the grates I have on my stove .

Okay, seems like from what I reading on here that that stove won't work very well for coal. I might do wood, I suppose it wouldn't take to much more wood cutting to get enough for my shop.

I burned wood and some coal for over 40 years. My first stove I hade a damper. Was a pain to clean the chimney. Back then a old guy said if air can't get in can.t get out. I never missed it.
