Do I Need a Damper?

Okay, seems like from what I reading on here that that stove won't work very well for coal. I might do wood, I suppose it wouldn't take to much more wood cutting to get enough for my shop.
 
I burned wood and some coal for over 40 years. My first stove I hade a damper. Was a pain to clean the chimney. Back then a old guy said if air can't get in can.t get out. I never missed it.
