I bought some loops of 3/8s low profile chain new in sealed Oregon labeled plastic bags. It has blued cutters-no chrome. Does anyone know the story on this chain?

I seen and sold some of it about 20 years ago. There used to be a supplier abck then called Zip Penn that sold unchromed chain. Also, as I recall, Homelite and Diston sold some unchromed chain.

Stumper, I wouldn`t buy any more of those loops, they sound like the cheap chromeless "cord cutter" chain Oregon sold for awhile in the early 80`s. Needless to say, it doesn`t hold an edge well.

Huskyman, It is different from a blueish chrome-it is just blued steel-just like the tie straps. I ran it some yesterday and it seems to cut fine but I didn't get a very good read on how it holds an edge-the stuff I was cutting had fence wire grown in it so I had to resharpen a couple of times-and would have had to with any of my other chain.

Use it for those suspect trees that are rotted in the middle and full of dirt, or have a lot of nails in them from bird feeders. Also I would use it on sappy trees like conifers so you dont goop up the good stuff.

At least without chrome if you hit something with it maybe you wont have to file it down so far to get the edge back
