this isn't, strictly speaking, a problem concerning chainsaws, but i hope you'll bear with me...

the thing is, my dad is a collector of antique chainsaws, and now his 60th birthday is coming up. not really knowing what saws he might want (he already has some 600 of them...), or how to get it, i've been on the look out for literature on old chainsaws instead. i guess i haven't been looking hard enough, 'cause i haven't really found any, apart from manuals and the like. so, anyone got any tips? the more coffee table-esque, the better...

kind regards

I don't believe that such a book exists. Have you or your dad looked at acresinternet.com a/k/a Chain Saw Collectors Corner? The Intertek (sp) repair book (now in it's 10th edition) lists a lot of saws, but it is a basic, general repair manual, not a coffeetable book with nice photos, etc.

If you do find such a book please let me know.

book

i agree with the previous post but ebay has lots of manual and repair books there i some on the cd that covers many mo:cheers: dles

My experience with manuals on CD is they usually contain information on the newer models. There are individuals who have put a collection obsolete manuals on CD (MacBob here on AS for one), but I don't have any of those. There are a few (very few) chainsaw books out there, but they tend to be very general, don't cover a wide variety of makes and models, and some are brand specific because they were produced by the manufactorer.

There are is some written chainsaw info available, just not in a single book. There's an old thread here at AS that covers chainsaw books.

I have looked for ones before and they are really in bits and pieces, I am prety sure there is not one with extensive coverage of many makers and models out.

I have sent emails to acres asking if they would ever consider putting their info on a cd and even offering to buy one. It would be so much more convenient to have on my laptop.

why dont you make a book for him... use pics of his saws and dig up the info as best you can on each one.. i am sure u aren't the only person to look for this type of book... if you do a really good job, you could publish so everyone could enjoy the collection :) just my .02

book

write one and make millions: volume one: mcculloch the true american muscle saws!! volume two; all others:jawdrop:

"Barnacle Parp's Chain Saw Guide" is fun reading. It was published in the 1970s and has some neat sections such as new and used chainsaw prices, safety tips and general use, and describes fundamamentals of how the mechanicals work. Its one of the few books I've came across dealing with saws aside from technical manuals. They can be found used, but I don't think they are currently being published.

The Charles Self book is good reading, but it's very general and now dated. I've seen a book on chainsaw use put out by McCulloch listed on eBay, and maybe one from Homelite??

I think a coffeetable book on chainsaws is a great idea, but with such a small target audience sales probably wouldn't cover the expense.
