Boots for the winter....

I am going to be buying a new pair of boots to wear during the rainy/snowy winter months. These boots must have stiff soles, goretex, and full leather uppers. I also want an over the ankle style boot. The best ones I have found thus far are these ones.

Do any of you guys have experience with these as far as durabilty? Any other suggestions?

those look pretty good. i picked these up for only 250$. They work pretty well with my climbers and they keep me warm on those cold days, i highly recommend them.

I'd wear those things, but I'd rather not look like a rainbow warrior. besides, I've got an old pair of insulated matterhorns that I wear in the cold months.

since you like your wesco's so much why not super gaitors? the pics show's a pair made by climb high, they have a thin sheet of thinsulate in them also for warmth.

there is a thick rubber rand that gets stretched over the edge of the sole and across the middle, then i glued them on with aqua seal.

the boots you showed from ems are really not a warm winter boot. i would not want to be standing around in snow in them all day. try searching for mountaineering boots. www.mgear.com www.altrec.com etc. if your going to be working in leather boots in the snow all winter you might want to invest in a boot dryer.

KF I have never seen the covers before. They work well? I have worn hikers in the winter before..I just wear a couple of pairs of wool socks and I am all set. I dont mind my feet being a little cool so long as the swaet can be wicked away and out to the surface i.e. no wet feet.

Cold months in florida are like what 46 on a bad day.
its gotten down to the 20's here once in awhile. my point is that the cold weather boots I"ve got will keep your feet warm in temps down to -20

Boot dryers are wicked awsome! My gortex Geogia boots are nice and warm and dry every winter morning. You might want to get some "stable icers" too. They are vibram soles with screws in them that stap on with velcro webbing. No more falling in drive ways!

ok guys ... what are the best boots to buy out there?

something with a steel toe and gore-tex.

good comfort , good climbing boots.

whatcha got.

Foot-locking Boot/Shoe?

Speaking of boots, I'm looking for a light, slightly tacky boot/shoe for foot-locking/pruning. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Danners,

I love Danners, been wearing them for close to ten years. I can get a year and a half out of a pair, and then have them rebuilt by Danner for cheap. I can usually get two rebuilds out of each pair. Got my newest pair online for $189.00 free shipping. You can buy them cheaper from online stores than you can direct from Danner, so shop around.

Hello, I have been reading the posts here for about 6 months and have finally decided to join.

A good pair of boots that I have used in all seasons are vasque Zephyr and a good set of gaiters in the snow.

I wear these boots year round in temps up to 135 to lows of zero. Whatever you choose I believe that it is the sock that can make or break your feet. Choosing good $7-12 a pair socks pay off at the end of the day.

Nice to formally meet all of you. Good luck.

Welcome! Thanks for joining. I agree a great pair of socks makes a heck of a difference. Everyone should check out smart wool socks the rock!

Btw where in idaho does it get to 135. A sauna? Never

The proving grounds for the boot was unfortunatlly not in Idaho. It was the on the other side of the world in Iraq, but that is another story accompanied by a cold beer. Idaho only gets to about 115.

oops, I pushed the wrong button on Idaho temp highs I ment 105 not 115. Big difference.

I wear REI Spirit-II moutain/hiker I like the grip and they have good ankle coverage, and a minimum of exposed seams to wear out.

I was wearing Danner, but they wore out way too fast. I get around 13 months out of my REI's.

do a search on the subject, there are several threads here on it.

The camps break down into;
  1. Cheap store bought work/hikers
  2. High end loggers
  3. High end hiker mountian
  4. top of the line ice boots for guys in gaffs regularly
