Hey all,

I have a question about a saw my neighbor gave/lent me last night. Admittedly I am a weekend warrior with a few acres woods around the house to clean up every spring. I've had some bad luck lately...my new Echo CS-306 air filter fell off, and the saw just about caught fire from all the dust & chips in the cylinder. My Dad lent me a old Poulan Pro a friend of his gave him, and it's almost useless...and dangerous to boot. The dang internal bar tensioner is complete crap. I've had an old monster Lombard for 15 years or so (That I found left in a garage)....but running that beast for scrub & limb clean up is just crazy. Hell, I'm worn out in an hour, and can't feel my hands until I've had at least 3 beers when I'm done.

Well,

Here's my question. After my neighbor came over to fish for a while, he had to hear about some of my saw problems, while I was crying in a beer about my Echo...probably. My neighbor said he had 6 or 7 saws laying around in his barn, and if I wanted one...just come over and grab one. So I took him up on that offer last night. We went over to shoot the (blank) for a while. And I reminded him about his offer. He says ..sure hang on a second. Goes down in his basement, and comes up with a yellow saw case. Hands it over, and says it was his grandfathers, who passed away some time ago. Tells me he will never use it.

So I haul it home. Open the case up. And.....

The saw inside is brand new. Never even been gased or filled with oil. It's a McCullock PowerMac 320. It's gotta be 20 years old...or more? Still brand new, never even seen a twig yet. The case even looks like it belongs on a store shelf, not a scratch or mark on it.

Now, I needed to ask some folks that know about saws. Is this saw...a saw I should just use and not fret about taking advantage of a neighbor? Or is this something I should return a tell him to keep it like it is?

Thanks in advance.

Gift? Hmm..maybe, I doubt it though

He did mention that he may want to have me show him how to drop a few small dead pines near his house with it.

I'm fairly sure he just wants me to get it running...use it as much as I like, then show him how to safely use a saw, and do a few odd jobs with him at his place.

It just seems kid of wrong to me....

Maybe it's I'm getting older, and hate to see a tool that might be a collector piece some day get used.

If you guys say I shouldn't worry about this saw ever being worth keeping in new condition...I won't fret about it. I just thought a group of folks like you would know.

Thanks.

P.S. The link in the previous post is the exact saw.

Ask him if you can trade it in on one of the others.

The saw would be destined to be a conversation piece more than a collectors piece, except for a serious Mac guy. I'd rebuild the carb and run it, offering to do some work for the neighbor as he requested.

I don't see it as being a really valuable piece going forward. If it was a bigger Mac, you may have a point, I just don't see it with this thing.

Have ta agree with Oldsaw (formerly known as AS MVP) and Manual, fix it, use it, teach the man safety and usage, but the question remains..............

The suspense is killin' me, like a vicarious treasure hunt, or waiting fer da Easter Bunny!!!!!!!

Sentimental Value.....and the Barn?

Hey folks,

I thank you for your input.

I've thought long and hard about the saw this afternoon, and I'm gonna take it back over across the road tomorrow. I'm gonna tell Mike I just can't make myself fill the oil & gas tanks. He did say it was his Grandfathers. He told me his Grandfather lived in town in his golden years, and left him with some equipment his Grandfather had to have, but never ended up using. I just can't put this saw to wood.

I'm gonna raid the barn!

My neighbor did tell me... he has some contraption that came from the shed here on my place. The old man that tore down the old cabin and built this house and the pond on one of the creeks here left some big a$$ gas powered recipricating sawing machine behind. That my neighbor now has....he saved it from being hauled off to the junk yard.

I wonder what else is in the barn?

Thanks,

Dan

That sounds like a "drag saw" and those are collectable. I wish I still had my old man's that I used as a kid. Even then it was so wore that it was almost useless, no power.
