Alright, I've been wanting a new one every since my old 044 got stolen, well today I bit the bullet. Now my questions are; is there anything I can do to break this saw in properly, or do I just use it?? I've had a handful of other saws, but haven't ever really paid much attention to break in, I just bought them, then started using them. What else will I need to do to insure proper care and long-life out of this saw (assuming it doesn't get stolen)??
thanks

Open the exhaust hole up in the muffler. I would run 32:1 oil in it too. Find a old style 044 or 046 carb with the adjustable hi & lo screws on it. Put it on the saw.

Congrats on the new saw, as for break in the only I was ever told by dealer was not to rev it out of wood for the first couple of hours. Use good gas and quality mix and you should be fine. As for not getting it stolen, keep your eye on it and keep it locked up.
Good luck.:)

No need to replace the carb if you have limiter caps on both the hi & lo sides. These can be worked around. The dual-port muffler is a strong suggestion.

Anyone have a pic they can show me of a muffler that's opened up?? I don't want to f-up my new saw. As for stolen, the last saws I got stolen were locked in my truck box, but I guess delta's are NOT burglar proof...

buy the factory front it works good for a work saw. Get a carb from a early 046 it has a larger inside dia also the mixture screws are not fixed Also run it the way your going to run it just let it cool more often for the first 4 tanks good luck

OK, we just want a good work saw here, not a racer. Buy the front cover with the outlet. You will then need to check the inlet lever height and remove the limiter caps. Shave off the tabs that stop them from turning and reinstall. If anyone asks, they fell off.
Match up the muffler inlet and gasket to the exhaust port.
Use the Stihl mix, set up the carb to smooth out nicely in the cut.

This will get you a saw that will keep you smiling. :D

I'm new to this... What is the front cover with the outlet??
I used the saw today and Loveed it. My old 044 must have been getting old because this thing seemed to rock compared to it.

Stihl makes a front muffler cover with two exhuast holes in it. You can make the hole bigger thats in the side of the muffler too.

I figured that must have been what you all meant, but I figured I'd look less dumb here than going to the dealership and being wrong. Thanks. What will I need to know to order it?? How big should I make the side outlet??

You can modified the stock muffler an save your money. Open the hole up in the stock muffler. A little bigger than a nickel.

I'd just cut with it for a while, keep the revs low out of the wood, and wait before doing any engine modifications. You may void your warranty if you start messing with it.

Would you void the warranty if you used a factory part? Front cover looks cleaner than hacking away at the muffler, too.

I'm not sure if the dealer would 1) be willing to look up the part# or 2) have any idea how to get it? It has been posted on this forum before, so a search will find it.

General suggestions:

Run 40:1 for a tank or two. Don't rev it too high out of wood. And before you begin making any changes, give it a chance to settle in. You might like it the way it is, or you might want to soup it up a bit...

Enjoy the new saw!

Well, I cut some more with it today, and I did like the saw the way it is. It had a lot of power for what I was doing. Just firewood for the hell of it today. I'm anxious to find the other front cover. Is the sound a lot different?? I took it apart last night and didn't really see any good way to open up the original exit of the muffler by drilling, unless you also went through the outside-deflector part of the muffler, so do you all grind the hole bigger, or do you use a drill bit somehow?? Any suggestions for a faster cutting chain other than the full-chisel I got from the stihl dealer??

Pretty hard to find much faster out of the box than Stihl chain. Skilled sharpening with enlarged gullets will be faster. Square ground or filed will be 15 % faster than that but is a fair investment of time and or money

my advice ,,would be to take u time..then when u find the other front mentioned,, get it and it even gets better.. if i paid that kind of mon.. id sure wait until after the warranty period to change what came with the saw..
of course if u did have trouble ,,u could buy an new muffler before u take it in..
if u stay on this site long ,u gonna do some modifying anyway.. but half the fun is getting it to perform to the max.. no hurry..jmo good luck

make sure,, u run an good mix.. like 32;1,, u.. an chainsaw warranty,, power ported u ,.. no hurry..,,an good luck chainsaw... jmo Bud.
