Hello-
I have a Brush Bandit model 60 with a Wisconsin 32 HP gas engine.

Problem is the shear pin used with the motor coupler to the feed wheel keeps breaking, even with small branches (1 inch).

Feed wheel bearings are good, wheel spins freely, it is adjusted to ride in the center of the feed chute, does not bind/hit either side. I lowered the pressure to the motor, tried everything that I can think of.

Any ideas would be truly appreciated.
thanks

George

what diameter is the pin hole and the pin inside it.

is the hole on the inside ovaled out allowing play.

are the pins good quality

ive found in hole that are fairly big putting the right pin in to the hole then inserting a smalller one inside that helps alot to.

Pics??

might try using a higher grade steel i know its supposed to shear off but weve had similiar problems and we use the super strong stuff and have not had any probs

response

Hi- thanks for the responses_
to TreeOperations- noticed you have a Brush Bandit 65
the model 60 is the predecessor, almost identical machine.
I bought it used, trailered it home. Used it once for a few minutes, then I noticed that the feed wheel motor seemed loose. Checked it, the wood ruff key was sheared and the shaft on the feed wheel was damaged. (think I got taken , had no practical knowledge of chippers when I bought it).

Uused an end mill to try and re-establish the slot on the feed wheel to accommodate a new wood ruff key. Lasted only a few minutes in use. Plan B, I called Brush Bandit, they approved my idea of drilling through the motor coupling and shaft and installing a bolt.

Same problem, even tried larger bolts. Bolts shear and the feed wheel motor shaft is getting more mangled by the action of the bolt shearing.

To Irish93stang
Motor and coupling can be mounted closer on the remaining good section of the feed wheel. Reluctant to destroy that until I get to the bottom of this. Driving me crazy.

Thanks:(

No

I can't find anywhere that it is hitting something.

Was hoping someone else had the model 60 and had the same problem.

Really at a dead end..
thanks

how much pressure is in the hydralic system, bits of wood jamb my feed wheel but it just goes to releif valve, im wondering if you releif valve isnt working and its getting jambed that way.

also check ya bearing it could be play in the drum shearing them off

Sounds good!

That sounds like it might be the problem.:biggrinbounce2:

I had backed off the adjusting screw 3-4 turns, maybe something is stuck.

Looked at the exploded parts list in the relief valve components, perhaps the poppit valve is stuck.

Hope you don't mind a dumb question, assume the relief valve supposed to divert/relieve pressure when the feed wheel jambs?

thanks so much, really appreciate your interest.

Weather is foul here today, will tinker with it tomorrow, Sunday,

Take care,

George

the releif valve is just a ball with a really tight spring pushing on it, it should let go at 2500psi i think (its what i have my 65 at).

when some thing jambs the feed wheel and stops it turning it will let the pressure divert the feed wheel and go back to the oil tank.

Thank you Tree Operations

Your advice on the relief valve was the answer.
Took it apart, confirmed no dirt etc. Reassembled and adjusted while the machine was running.

Kept adjusting until feed wheel started turning, a few chipping tests/adjustments after that, works like a charm!!

Thank you so much.

as we say here in nz SWEET AS BRO haha.

keep checking it as the damn springs are like everything else, they wear out.

take it to a hydralic specialist and get them to check the pressure cause ya dont want to to feed like a vermeer haha.

One more thing-Tree Operations-

I want to replace the blades, can you suggest a good source for that?

I called Brush Bandit directly, they do not ship parts to New Jersey.

Had spoken to Brush Bandit local distributor when I was fooling with the problem, not helpful, more like sarcastic jerks..

Ebay?

thx

im not in the states mate, im on island in the south pacific,

have a look in the large equipment forum and you will find something there, i know there is a blade that is commonly had after market.

try the place that sharpens your blades they will know of some where to get them possibly.

cheers
