We have a pit that all the junk off the processors and sawmill goes in. It's about 20x20ft, maybe 15ft deep.

When we burn, it goes for weeks before it's burned out. My Dad suggested I feed air into it to help with the burning.

Would something like this work:

Set that a ways away and stick a piece of 6" well casing in the hole, connect the 2 with flexy pipe.

We had a guy call us to give a bid on chipping all the trees and brush from clearing a development. When we got there he had a giant Squirrel Cage Fan with a big inline 6 diesel hooked up to it. It had some "fire" related name on it and was made just for burning big piles. We passed on the bid because everything had been pushed into the burn piles with a dozer so it was all packed with dirt. He said we were the last company to pass on the project and they were going to get the burn permit. It was only $10 bucks back in the 70's, and burning was no big deal.

The logging co. that did the expansion on the local landfill used a burner of some kind but it was more like a huge torpedo heater..they ran it at night and it reduced mountians of brush to ash by the morning.

I've got a nice East breeze right now blowing on my brush pile right now. Some sort of piping/tubing would help if you don't want to use electric fans. You just need air velocity from somewhere, and generally a fire that gets hot enough can create that draw. Forced air is certainly beneficial though. I started at 8:30 with a pile over 10 ft high, and probably 15x20 or somewhere in there, it's a good 90% gone right now. Hopefully I have enough coals tomorrow though that I can push what didn't burn on the sides upwind on top.

I always thought about buying a cheap wood chipper and using plastic feed bags. I always have some measure of debris from the wood piles/splitting in the spring, but the stove is shut off. I cram that and feed bags and throw them in the barn or in the pile By winter its dry and ready to toss in the OWB.

Lots of quick heat in there for bringing the stove up to temp after a long day at work and filling gaps in the stove load I can't get with chunks in the morning.

Wood chips are tough to dry out without turning them a few times. I thought about building a drying rack one time. Idea being to get air to more sides. Spread them on the rack about 4-6" thick and leave them in the sun. I bet they'd dry in a day or two. In a pile I know they just heat up and rot. I imagine bags could have similar issues.

Valley, I bet that would work pretty well. Maybe hook up a chunk of exhaust pipe for getting the air closer to the fire and just let it blow. Probably have to move it a few times to get it all burnt up but I'm guessing it would greatly shorten your burn times

You also have to be really careful with open burning of any brush during the dry seasons. This past week it was so dry we had dust storms. Even sparks from brush or wood chip fires can travel rather far with a strong wind and set entire yards and fields on fire. Believe me, they can spread like wild fire, and about all you can do is watch them in helplessness.
