Found some neat dead stuff this past weekend. Got some juniper burl and some stuff I have no idea what it is. Here's the juniper burl:
Here's the others:
The red/pink stuff is really hard, medium weight. It smells a lot like mesquite but it's not mesquite. Will have to find some locals that know what it is. I found it in a wash, pile of debris cluttered in the bottom of an arroyo. The stuff that looks like walnut is a shrubby little tree that has leaves like a holly. It's very hard, moderately heavy, and has fleck in the grain like oak. Vibrant yellow sapwood, too, that stains the skin. I have lived in NM for about 6 yrs. & am still trying to learn the native vegetation.
edit: The brown wood is desert scrub oak, which explains the ray pattern in grain & hardness of the wood. Still searching for the pink wood. I think it may be cats claw acacia.
