Do any of you guy's logging ever bother with burls.I use to keep them and give them to one of my dads friends but i have given him 100 or so in the last year and just got one bowl for it.I'm not complaining but Fri i was falling some big yellow birch in a swamp and found one Burl that went all the way around the tree that was about 36 inch on the stump. So i cut it off in three pieces one is about 28inch across and 10 inch's deep the other one just a bit smaller and then one 16 inch's.One fit in the cab of the skidder one on the hood bungee corded down and one in between the winch and the arch plus five nice yellows on behind the skidder. There were hard as hell to lift on to the skidder all me and my skidder driver could do to get them up there.I could of left them on the tree till we got out to the landing but i though the guy im working for would take them so this way he couldn't.But they all have birds eye in them i was just wondering if they would be worth good money to the right person and if any of you have had experience selling them.

HI Buzz burl wood like you have is worth selling to the right person. You may want to cut it down in to smaller pieces. Some guys want to cut them down them self. When ever my sister came by here i would give
her burls and turning blocks. they where cut small 4x4x10 inch or 6x6x8 different shapes and size for turnning. She would list them on ebay and sell them all.

gid'day buzz. as a collector and builder of burl furnishings, as well as selling the odd one. I usually charge on average, a $1.00 a pound for the average grain burl more if it has a more unusual figure. if you say that your burl has a bird eye figure , it is more likely a twig cluster than a burl. It will produce a more fantastic figure than a regular yellow birch burl. I don't bother to much with regular big birch burls, because they have a tendency to split apart like an onion would around the rings. where abouts in Ontario are you located?

I live 2 hours north of toronto if you have any intrest in them i might be able to email some pic's.As for a buck a pound these things took 2 guys to lift into my truck. Is there anyway to perserve them this time of year i was told that you guy that work them don't like them dried out.

yes people who do wood turnings of bowls prefer green materials. I have to dry my stuff because I am building furniture with it. I usually slab thicker than what I really need it to be, put it away in the barn and hope for the best. If it twists and turns I'll put it back on the mill and resaw it flat when I need it. checks and cracks are filled in some cases, or sometimes they add to the look of the piece of furniture. I have tried a bunch of other things to preserve them but it all adds time and cost. I never had a chance to tour up your way, next time The mrs. can convince me to visit her brother in toronto, I should dump her off and take a ride up your way,, I would rather look at trees anyday than visit a city
