I haven't worked on that model Tillotson carb or that kind of saw but i wonder is there any chance the original carb was replaced with another model / variant Tillotson that was actually not the correct carb for that saw at some point?

There are any number of possibilities. All I know is that this saw is in mint condition, used very little from all appearances. And it seems that I have hijacked Kshansen's thread. Sorry about that. Don't know if it can be moved to my original thread in what's on your bench or another on Tillotson Carbs.

thinking about this, it really doesn't make any difference. the whole compartment for the carb is under this filter. if you're worried about that small hole taking air and dust into the carb throat, the entire carb inlet is sucking in massive amounts of that same air/dust like a vacuum.

I totally agree. Please remember, my original question was, should there be anything in there or is it the way it should be? Could there be a Welsh plug, screen, etc. missing? Also why is it there? What is its purpose?
All openings are pretty much sealed by grommets, ie: throttle linkage, choke linkage, fuel line. OT

If that opening is on the front side of the throttle butterfly in the venturi, I suppose it wouldn't have any affect on how the saw runs. I probably missed this but are you having trouble tuning the saw? Or just happened to notice that mysterious air passage?

It is behind the throttle butterfly towards the reed valves. I noticed it while rebuilding the carb. Not having any tune problems yet as it's still off the saw. Here is a better pic of the hole I am concerned about.

My thoughts exactly. I've decided to leave it as is, put it back on after saw body is cleaned up and see what happens. I will let you know. lol Thanks again. OT

Good plan!

If you can't get the saw to tune, one thing you could always do is carefully drill and tap that little passage with a small drill and tap and install a tiny set screw to plug it. Then you could aways unplug it.

Dug this 24" bar out. NOS Homelite replaceable nose. Lot of bar for 57cc.

I run a modern 30" bar on mine- the sprocket tip really helps vs the hard tip on my old OEM 24". Definitely too long a bar so the cuts have to be managed- but it is effectrive.

30" bar on that saw means no bending over. I stuck a 42" hardnose on my Poulan 744 gear drive and sunk it in large round. Absurd looking but the saw did not struggle a bit.

Another Homelite done. XL875. This need fuel lines and the carb done right. Somebody installed the needle lever upside down. High screw was backed out at least 4 turns. Probably didn't run at all. That's all it needed besides fuel lines. Diaphragms and gaskets were all good so I reused them.

I was snooping parts saws for an oiler plunger. This C91 stood out as more complete than I recall. Dug through my boxes and found everything but a clutch and choke lever. Compression is good.

bad ass. can you imagine that today? it would have guards all over it, a huge muffler and 37 warning labels.

On my bucket list for YEARS.Before 'retiring'' in Aug 2019 I pretty much finally found all the different saws I'd wanted over the years,but that one (especially in decent shape & not with an extortionate price tag) still eludes me to this day.


Maybe someday I'll get lucky......If not,no big deal.Already found quite a few ''rare ones'' so I'm quite pleased with what I have.

I've seen two of the gas circular saws go for about 200 each locally. Never thought they were worth buying
