I got a 5085M 85hp John Deere tractor 4x4 with loader and am looking to buy a bush hog. I am actually looking at the 307 model. I think since I am in the mountains and will be sneaking into corners and hard spots that I need a 3 point hook up. I plan on doing some hogging for a few of my ex tree customers. I wanted to ask since I am not very familiar with this type of work , what you guys with experience think of that choice? My tractor weighs over 10 k. Will mainly be for grass but needs to be overkill some for the rocks and brush and of course the stuff that isn't supposed to be there :). Thanks for any advice.

Check out the Rhino brand. They're tough heavy duty cutters...I think theyre better than the Bush Hogs but theyre darn sure ever bit as good. Ive got a 15' and a 6'. The 6' is prolly close to 500 years old-lol. If youve got a Rhino dealer close check em out.

Whatever you get be sure you get a big gear box and a stump jumper on it so you can do the bigger brush and rougher places when the chances come up. And make em put safety chains on it so it doesnt sling as much crap around. But you'll love the Rhino - guaranteed

Thanks for the reply. I havent had a chance to check out the Rhino hogs yet but I will as my dad had a heavy duty rhino scrape blade. I used to pack silage with it on a 5000 ford, awesome blade. Its harder than I thought picking out a size and style (too many options). I like the dual tail wheels over a single as it keeps the corner out of the ground on un-even ground. I see circumstances where a right of way hog would be great but when just doing normal stuff it is way to heavy. Thanks again for reply and appreciate any more you fellows might have.

+1 on the stump jumper also, make sure it has an adjustable clutch pack and hardened gears, I can't believe some of the junk that is sold as " heavy duty"

with a 85 hp you could run a 12ft batwing if you wanted lol
Bushhog brands are nice also TSC carries the King Kutter brand and I can vouche for how tough they are. And for sure get a 3point

For detail clean up work I use a 3 point JD brush cutter, I've always used a large chain in place of the rigid third link, it allows the hog to float with the ground. For large scale pasture clipping, draw bar 15' bat wing. With 85 hp you can handle a good sized hog, just clipping pasture it'll handle a 15' bat wing, used to do it with a little 6200 JD all the time. Be sure you get a stump jumper under it. The three point will let you get into corners and places tht would be tough with a pull type. Rhino, Bushhog and JD all make good cutters.
