Busted redux.
Thanks for all the advice so far.
The new handle assembly went pretty good for a first timer.
Got everything back together for a test run and the mighty 036 ran as good as ever.
Then the trouble began.
Couldn’t mount the air filter. The tank vent is completely different than the original.
Tall, black, and in the way of the oem filter.
Tried bending it gently out of the way only to find the oem carb studs on the broken handle are longer than those on the replacement by 3/8” inch or so. Filter screws won’t make contact even with vent removed.
I can pull it apart and swap studs, but that won’t solve the vent issue.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated..
Thanks, Professor. This might help. 036 clutch/tank vent updates.
The 026 and the 036 went through a similar transition of fuel tank vents, the tall black vent was the early tank vent, then a lower white cap type with the orange umbrella style was used, the later black duck bill style covered with a bigger white cap, they cannot be interchanged due to the mount holes being of differing diameters. The vents can be adapted to this style connected with a piece of fuel line.

Thanks, Professor. I’ll adapt.I've never had problems with the old style Stihl vents (pre 026/036/044), just grub screws and a fuel resistant line. Only ones bad if you didn't clean AF housing and the line gets plugged with crap (easy fix) , or the saw/tubing is so old the line deteriorates (seen that on my 038s near 40 year old saws).
And that's why I like old cars/trucks too......
