Hey all. I ran into a tree that I didn't know last week. Was hoping someone might be ablt to help. The tree was planted from a nursery and is growing in Minneapolis, MN.

I've got another challenge in plant health if anybody cares to try.
Thanks for the input on the tree above!

I wanted to say some type of birch as well the way the bark is peeling. Sure doesn't look like a clump river birch. I thought river birch was popular but I've never seen a tree like this. What's the consensus?

cherry without a doubt

Its n[ot Acer griseum....look at branch structure and budset, paperbark maple has different color bark, and would not grow in that form...its not a river birch...straight river birches dont have exfoliating bark... only "heritage' and 'cully' cultivars do...branch looks like cherry, buds look like cherry..so i woudl say..hmm its a cherry..oh and look a the horizontal lenticils..another indication of cherry

Next question. Should this tree be trimmed for straight single trunk structure like a pin oak or left with multi trunks like fruit tree? Will it get tall or remain small ornamental/bush like?

Looks like Amur cherry (P. Maackii)

Slow growing ornamental with a tenancy for cankers here.

I'd prune it to reduce vigor in the included limbs, and try to get some of the codoms to turn into branches. If you remove those large low limbs entirely you will stress the heck out of the tree.

Birch bark is P. serrula, it has heavy lenticil clusters, exfoliates on younger wood, not so much on mature-er wood.

By george, I think we have a winner! That's my tree John Paul! Thanks much! Well Don, tell him what he's won! John Paul Sanborn, you're going to enjoy even more reputation points than before! Even though you surely don't need them.

Thanks Again
