I was thinking about buying a cant hook, finally.

I'm looking at the LOG RITE aluminum ones and they have 2 kinds , the ones with the spike end and the one with a L shaped end.

I'LL use the cant for big wood mostly. Over 24 in. diameter

What can you guys tell me about the differences in use of the different designs?
And also about the quality of the log rite brand in general ?

At the farm show we had north of here awhile ago i bought a Peavey Cant hook-4.5 ft wooden handle...it works like a charm-I love it. I was considering orderin the Log rite through Balieys but i decided to go to the farm show to see what was there.

I had a cheapo metal one where the hook was no more than a cone w/ a point-wouldnt even grab into a rough barked log....still not quite sure where that POS landed LOL

I used the search and was able to answer my questions.
But if anyones got an opinion, I'm listening. Thanks !

Yup...there was a whole thread on peavey vs. canthook awhile back.
The only thing I'll add is that if you get one you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
I use the old style (naturally) wooden handle peavey but if I ever wear it out I'd look real hard at one of the modern ones.

Yeah, I found that thread.

I've been using a 6 ft. breaker bar to turn the logs , but that's getting old.
I'll order the new cant sometime this week after price shopping a little.

I've got two that are older than me! They are both pointed style and work great. If I was ever to get a new one I'd probably try the timberjack type that are a two in one tool. The timberjack is handy for sawing off the ground and the cross piece comes off with a pull of a pin and it's a normal cant dog.

You will find that there are times when a cant hook works better and other times when a peavey works better. The cant hook is my favorite but I just bough a 5' Stihl branded Logrite to compliment it. I also custom ordered two 6' pry bars to help move logs. The Logrite tools can be bent but it takes a strong man to do that. Rolling a 24" log over rough or soft ground takes some work BTW. I hope to add a 78" Logrite sometime soon.

Hi guys,

I am not the logger type, but more of an arborist. But still need the same tools to get our work done.

I have both. Old wooden tools that they are they both still work.

Anyway, Cants or cant hooks are used mainly to turn square wood or cants on the decks of sawmills. I can see by their design that this tool is great for that purpose and they do work for other applications like turning small diameter logs over to finish cutting them. I have used a cant many times for turning logs but it leaves a little to be desired if you know what I mean. It will work but can be a little frustrating to work with and some what limiting.

I think the Peavey came about as tool for raftsmen floating logs downstream when the only way to move them was by floating them down river to a mill. The Peavey was also used in the mill pond to turn , pry and push logs apart which is where the point comes in to play.

I think all that trivia info is correct anyway,

I have used the Peavey much more for turning big wood than a cant hook. I can get a better bite with a Peavey on a big piece of wood much better than a cant hook. You can also pivot a log better with a Peavey, use the point to pry apart cut sections of a big log or use the point as a fulcrum sometimes.

I am also in the same market for a new tool, I think I will stick with the Peavey but buy one one of those metal ones from Logrite. Haven't heard anyone say anything bad about one or the other.

Logrite Rocks! I would not trade for mine..in fact I am about to order a couple more...

Logrites are great but the can bend.

Wow! :jawdrop: You must have really been heaving on the logrite peavey to get it to bend like that. I'm pretty sure they have a lifetime warranty? I was using my 60" peavey today and I had a log froze to the ground pretty good. I tried pushing pretty hard and the log wouldn't budge. I noticed the aluminum peavey starting to bend a little and decided not to try any harder otherwise it might look like yours in the previous picture. I took a 10 lb sledge to try and knock the log free and that didn't work either. I guess I'll just wait a few more days here in Michigan for the weather to warm up.
I say buy the Logrite brand peavey. You can stand it up by sticking it in the ground when your not using it unlike the cant hook.

I ended building my own with a unbreakable handle theres been times i have stood on the lift part of it for extra leverage .

LOL! I am not the one who bent it. My friend Swiss Andy did and if you knew Andy who would not doubt it could happen. He is incredibly strong and also woods smart. Normally his tools last longer than other peoples. he is not an abuser. We will send it back for warranty coverage when time permits.

No, I am not strong enough to bend it. In fact I really should see a doc now. Cough, cough. Uh-oh.

I don't suppose swiss andy is the andy I've met years back, worked draft horses in the swiss army, hasa fiesty Percheron, lives in central Cali...... Just wondering, awful coincidence, then again maybe not

Andy and Andy did a horse logging demo on some land I lived on out in NorCal for a few years. Had to get out of there cause the landowners didn't really want to do too much too real. Not to inspiring when you have goals set for yourself. that is if you consider your work and successes as reflection of your personality and being. But Swiss Andy seemed like a real cool fellow.
