So I noticed the cutter wheel on my chipper (carlton 2512hd with about 800 hrs) had shifted toward the engine just enough to prevent the wheel locking pin from sliding in. Upon further inspection the belt-side cutter wheel bearing race and cutter shaft were trashed. I assume at some point the previous owner didn't grease it and the race spun on the shaft. I figured I'd go ahead and replace bearings on both sides but for the life of me I can't press the opposite side bearing off. I built a jig that allows me to use my 20 ton bottle jack but the bearing won't budge. I don't want to use heat except as a last resort so I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and could offer some help. Thanks

You're going to have to cut the bearing off with a torch or ziz wheel or both. When using a cutting torch, you don't want to get into the shaft. When you get to the race, use a ziz wheel and a chisel and split the race off of the shaft. Before putting on the new bearing, clean up the bearing seat on the shaft with emory paper and then seat the bearing. Use blue Loctite when you install the set screws on the locking collar.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Dave, I did cut the bearing off and had to replace the shaft anyway due to the previous owner not greasing the belt-side bearing. The bearing spun on the shaft and grooved it. That's the price of used equipment. I will give a shout out to carlton though, they make amazing equipment and their customer service is top notch!

You can have the shaft built back up by a machine shop, which would be a lot less expensive than buying a new shaft.

We're located in Marietta, GA if you ever need any help.

Thanks!
