I do not like trying to remember how to use it but after that hurdle is crossed it is okay. I was giving some to a friend of mine and needed to show him how to use it. For a minute, it was the blind leading the blind.

They wear out(fast if you are sloppy) so do not think that you will buy one and have it forever. They are cheap for a reason they are meant to be replaced every couple of chains at best.

If we're talking about the Carlton File o Plate the ones I have are some kind of super hard steel. I've used the same one on rakers for years and there is hardly any noticable wear.

carlton file-o-plates are harder than #%^%--i sell them--and used properly--your get the max life out of the chain--

We also sell the File-O-Plate, and I agree they are very hard. Not everybody likes using them but the ones that do like them swear by them. We use them ourselves for setting the chain grinder for correct raker height.

You sell File-O-Plates? They used to be free with chains. I hope they are not very expensive.

The ones that I have are not super hard steel. They look like a low quality Stainless stamped plate. They file quite easily with a Pferd file.

I had a five gallon bucket(all different sizes) of them and gave them to people that needed help with angles and depth. Most would use them a couple of times and never again, sometimes give them back. Those that used them each time they sharpened their chains usually needed another one soon. Luckily we consumed the bucket and all I have is a couple extras. The ones I have do not hardly ever get used as the Pferd file system is vastly easier to use.

I might pay a dollar for one but that would be about it. They are a good teaching and learning tool. For free they were hard to beat.

My pferds don't even scratch mine, just kinda buffs them a little. If I live long enough and file enough chain to ever wear one out, I will step right up and lay out the $3 for a new one, with a smile. I like using them, although I freehand half the time.

Sorry mate, it is of course the file o plate. Just got mine in the mail today, I'll check them out. Thanks for the responses.
