Any of you Dolmar/Makita guys know where I can get a case for my 6401?

Dolmar's case does not fit the Larger saws (bigger than the PS-540), at least according to the castalog. You would have to check Tractor Supply, or other saw shops. I think the Stihl case will fit a 6401, but who wants a Makita/Dolmar saw in a Stihl case?

LOL...I agree...I was looking at those Cub Cadet saws at Tractor Supply last night and was thinking of putting it in there. Or Stihl's black saw case. At least it isn't the Stihl orange...

There are some similar to the new Husqvarna case on Ebay...black, no name, room for oil, tools, etc...

Dolmar really should get there act together and have a Dolmar oarange case made that will fit these saws, with DOLMAR in big letters on it. We just can't have theses Dolmar/Makita saws riding around in Poulan, Stihl, Husqvarna, and Cub Cadet cases :)

I agree, I "heard " putting a Dolmar in any other case will have it run poorly!!! LOL
I really wish someone made a generic case to fit the Dolmar/Makita saws(the larger ones).

Most of the users of saws over 3 CID hate those bulky cases anyway. Its a Dolmar 6401-You can custom carve a case for it out of a nice big log using the saw. :p

I've got one of those orange Stihl cases that was thrown in with a saw once.  I don't use it though, for a couple of reasons.  First it's the bulk, but I really hate carrying it around because it takes two hands to cradle it.  I wonder why they make a case with a handle, but then boldly state right under the handle "Do not hang by handle".

customized K-Mart storage box

Not enough room in factory cases, if you want a case, for tools, chains, etc.

K-Mart etc. sells small $3 "storage boxes" which are about the same size as the outside of the Stihl case. Cut a slot out for the bar, and build a small "pad" to hold the saw in the bottom. You'll have much more room for tools, chains, and oil rags etc., and they'll be better organized inside the flat square bottom, since all the tools and files and etc. won't be trying to "roll" to the bottom center of the rounded (aerodynamic-?) cases, e.g. piled up under the saw. Instead, the tops just snap off and don't take up any space, which is nice, as the box will remain stable when the top is opened, and you won't need twice the width of the case to get out the saw. (Not so, with Stihl, where you need half an acre of space, to fold the top cover completely over, just to get at a little file.) And, if you put a 1/2" hole in the side, you'll have ventilation for moisture exhange. The problem with the closed cases, is that they accumulate condensation of moisture if left outside. (Gas odors aren't going to be sealed up in anycase.) Also a regular bar cover can be used, and stored in the box when not in use. So you have your regular bar cover with you (not so with Stihl case.)

Price ... $3.00

I dont have a problem with the stihl case, because all my saws are orange and gray anyway. Just another thing that makes them the best. If the case holds a 460m why wouldn't it hold a 6401. An old trick to make plastic dirtbike gas tanks bigger was to disconnect hose, fill them up wit boiling water and blow compressed air into them to expand it. maybe something like that would work??

Justin, Most of the 6401 will fit in the Stihl case, you just can't close the lid because the handlebar and the brake lever are too tall. RAHTREELIMBS has modified a Stihl case to fit his Dolmar 7900 (same chassis as the 6401) I shy away from that as it makes the case weaker. That being said, most of my saws do not regularly see the inside of a case.

Paul, I run a bungy cord around the case to keep it from opening. The snaps that Stihl uses leave a little to be desired.

Call me crazy but all my saws that are in use have cases. When I spend $400 to $800 on a saw and then another $200 to have it modded I like to protect it.
