this may be the wrong place for this....i have a ton of cedar trees in my yard. i have 15-18 that i am going to cut down and i have a rather small yard(3/4 acres) one of the trees is probably 35-40" in diameter, probably 100+ years old. is there a market for cedar trees? do you think anyone would be interested in buying them? they are all large trees that are straight. i was planning on using 4 of them for posts for a tall deer stand i want to build. i hate to just throw it all away as i don't burn fire wood(not that much anyways)

I've taken down and milled a bunch of Red Cedar and it's fantastic wood for paneling, or decking. It's very pretty and has that great aromatic gerbil cage smell. I paneled an entire three quarter bathroom including the ceiling with the stuff that I had milled to half inch on a woodmizer band saw. Didn't even have to plane it. I'm going to build a large porch with 1 inch decking. Much better than burning it in the woodstove.

MILL IT!!!! You can pick up a small mill for a decent price and maybe break even on the cost of the mill vs. buying the lumber. I know my mill has almost payed for itself and I have not milled that much wood.

how much is a small mill? i know my dad may be willing to go in with me. and are you saying it will break even by selling the cedar wood or by using the wood myself?

by using it yourself. It costs a fortune to buy lumber and good lumber is crazy. I got mine for $2500. It is from Harbor Freight. It is made by Hud-Son and works well. You can't get big trees on it but I usually rip em in half with the saw first. I bought some steel last fall so I can widen it out and make it longer. The first thing I did to it was gut the muffler. It was completely blocked by a plate inside. That plate had a few dinky holes in it and really choked it off. It now cuts with authority at about 5,000 rpm. I want to get a smaller driven pulley to get the band speed up higher. I love to hear it sing. I like the fact that I can roll it into the back of the pickup and haul it. Timber King has some good promotions on their mills if you want to start out with a bigger one.

Theres a guy in the town I live in that makes furniture or something out of cedar. My buddy the other day told me the next time I chop down a cedar dont just junk the big stuff because apparently he pays decent money so maybe theres someone near where you live that would buy it. but you'd probably have to get it there too.... I live in central Indiana btw so if you live close by I can find out more, if not I'll know the next time I cut down a big cedar.
