Heres some Tree ID pictures that I started to play with for studying for the Cert. Test.

Some of the pictures are not the greatest, but I will keep adding for everyone's benefit.

Husky, my pictures were not so nice and clear nor so well intentioned (less id'able factors). most were from a distance and some had closeups of leaves that were viewable without a loupe. :) In fairness to the exam the pictures and trees they showed should have been identifiable by a person with reasonable experience and knowledge. I passed the ID section so I cant complain too hard but I certainly scratched my head for a couple of them.

Hey Jimmyq,
Did they have pictures of lets just say a white fir from a distance, and in the answer selection they had white fir, but blue spruce, white spruce, etc? Or was it slighty easier to narrow. It would be hard to tell the diff. between a spruce and a fir from a distance, without cones.

Lets try a refresh,
One question I have about the Cert. Arbor. test for tree ID is the chapter mailed me a list of 100 trees, no problem, but there are three buckeye trees on the list. I know what a buckeye looks like, my question is on the test will they show a buckeye tree and then have the three buckeye tree species to pick from on the answer sheet (which can be hard to id only by leaves), or will there be many different trees such as a maple, elm, ash, buckeye making it easier to differentiate.

They usually put similar cultivars or species that could be mistaken, they don't make it that dead easy.....

Husky, Whom Are You Wishing To Be Certified Through, If Its The I.s.a You`ll Have Noooooo Problem As Ive Stated In Other Posts I Know People Who Cant, wont And Have Never Climbed Who Are Cert. I Know Office Personell Who Are Certified. If You Have Any Knowledge Of Trees & Have Been In The Field For A While You`ll Do Fine Good Luck Doug Lxt....

In a way we are lucky here. The ct arborist exam consists of: for $25 you take the written portion, pesticides and all that fun stuff at the Department of Environmental Protection. Given you passed that you are "invited" for the oral exam at the CT Agricultural Experiment Staition. Pass the ID portion, then the fun part, you get grilled by people who will probably have a doctrite. They pretend to be an ignorant customer and you are the confident knowlagable arborist, then back to being scientists, they grill ya further. Cool thing is the Ag Sation grounds are open to the public and all the trees are numbered, needless to say you should pass the id part. By the way Husky, youz got some interesting maples the in Pa, cool.

<marquee>Yes, good idea. </marquee>

I have a plant ID album myself. It was mainly tied in with my safe woods for birds page

(By the way, the moving text is not an error : - )

But I'm going to add to iit, especially in spring when leave appear.

Isn't the ISA the only association that does certification?

NO! CERTAIN STATES SUCH AS CT. NE. AND MASS. HAVE THEIR OWN PROGRAMS. I WAS IN THESE AREAS AWHILE BACK 98/99 FOR THE ICE STORMS THAT HIT. I TALKED TO SOME OF THESE STATE CERT, ARBORISTS AND GAINED INSIGHT ON THEIR REQUIREMENTS. THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE!!!! SKILLS TESTS, TREE ID , DIAGNOSIS, GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, ETC... THESE MEN/LADIES ARE THE REAL MCcoy!! NOT SOME PAY ME AND ILL CERTIFY YOU PRIVATE ORG. THAT REQUIRES TESTING THAT IS ALL MULTIPLE CHOICE!!! LIKE I SAID THEIR LITERATURE IS GREAT BUT THEIR CERT PROGRAMS ARE A MON$Y MAKIN BUNCH OF ?@#$. I KNOW MOST WILL THINK THAT GOVT. GETTING INVOLVED IS BAD AND I AGREE BUT WHEN A PRIVATE ORG. RUNS ITS SELF SUCH AS THE ISA, CORRUPTION WILL PREVAIL, LIKE PEOPLE CERTIFIED THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN IN A TREE. ATLEAST STATE TESTING PUTS US ALL ON THE SAME PAGE(like a CDL). I DONT KNOW BUT THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY OR THIS TRADE UNDER THE ISA`s WATCH IS GONNA LOSE CLIMBERS RIGHT AND LEFT, HOW MANY KIDS GRADUATING HIGHSCHOOL WANT TO BE CLIMBERS TODAY, IN PA(ABIG 0) HOW ABOUT SOME THOUGHTS ON THIS!!!!! DOUG, LXT
