I'm running 050 on my 346 and 361 but was thinking about the 7900 that might be in my not too distant future. Is there any advantage to stepping up to 58 or 63 with a larger saw? I thought I read somewhere that the beefier chassis resists chain stretch better.

What I'm used to is .050 on anything less than 36", and .063 on 36+. I've had no problems with stretch on my 660 running .050 when I run the 32" bar on it. (never had any problems on smaller powerheads running a 32" bar and .050 either)

Same here... I run .050 on my 3120's less then 36" bar.. I do have .404 for all my bigger saws .. But the .050 works good too..

i find no decernable difference in gages in 3/8. i "think" the chain chassis is the same. just the drag link part that goes into the bar is thicker.

maybe others w/ more experience do.

I say buy what ever is most available in your area. For me that is .058 locally but for you it might be .050 or .063 I would think .050 is more a standard. As far as chain stretch goes I think it is a old wives tail.

This has been discussed at lenght here at least a couple of times before.

I believe the "latest and greatest" conclution is that the chassis is the same, only the thickness of the drive tangs differ, at least on Stihl and Oregon made chains......
