Chain only moves with loose barnuts.

If they turned the studs so you can run a standard Stihl mount instead of the big Stihl mount. The tail of the standard mount bar is narrower than the big mount bar. The mount pads on the saw and on the cover were designed for the wider tail bar, so whats happening now is the cover is squezing the rails together instead of just clamping the bar. This will become more critical the further the bar is adjusted away from the saw because the bar is even narrower on the end.

I agree, good answer.

Went out and put some shims in, then put the cover on, and couldn't pull the chain around without quite a bit of effort, and there was almost 1" of sag.

Pulled the cover off, put in some filler material, put the barnuts on, then pulled the chain around, still some effort, New tip, paint in the way, but better. So I started it in this configuration, and just let it idle, it was moving the chain on it's own at idle, so I bumped the throttle and there was some hesitation but it did okay.
Shut it down, tightened up the chain so there was no sag, still no outer cover, and tried it again, better enough to put in wood but need to baby it.

Here's a pic of the inside of the outer cover, there are issues, might not be the right cover.

The cover "look's" right... It's missing the rear chip deflector but I just compared it mine and it look fine.. Is that part number on the lower center 1111 648 0400 or similar?

Do you have a big mount (yes, I know you have modified studs, but..) stihl bar to try on it?

Lake;

No, no big mount bar.
Yes, the part number you show is correct, does the round guard area usually go to pieces after a number of years, is that normal wear.? does the lack of that round skirt on the cover cause a problem?

You have the correct side cover then. Yes the circular guard gets beat up over time - loose clutch drum bearings, crud etc all take their toll. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd find a stihl or equivalent big mount bar, change your studs back if necessary and try that. Pity you don't live closer -no shortage of them in my shop!

'cos the 10,000lb log is there?

Yes I was just talking about cleaning up the mess left by the loggers earlier. but sometimes it's getting the site cleaned up enough to bring in a field mill My Brother has a mill that you can set up no matter how the log is laying and as you say,,, Ya bring that mill to the Log,,,, much easier to tote boards out a few @ a time than tring to get a skidder down in a creek bottom and chance getting it stuck!!!!! BTDT no fun:angry: :angry: :bang:

Andy He lives closer then me.........:D :D

.

I'll play with it some more tomorrow, although, it's a bit unnerving running without a cover, some fender washers will ensure the bar stays put during operation. Until I figure out a conducive solution anyway.

Ultra, you are closer to Andy.:jester:
