As you can see from my other post, my Poulan 3400 is running. I need to have the chain sharpened. When I took the original chain that came with the saw to a saw shop for sharpening the guy looked at me and said I had two choices: I could throw it away or he could! Most times that would sound like a smart alek remark, but this was a busy sawshop, and the guy seemed to know what he was talking about and said it in just the right way. I let him throw it away.

He sold me a chain that has (chrome, stainless steel) teeth. I haven't seen chrome looking shiney teeth on any saw I've looked at in the past few months. Are these still made? I've had good service out of it and plan to have it sharpened. I also want to buy a spare chain for this saw. Any recommendations on type of chain? I know there are a number of variables and do not know anything about them, except that I probably need a low kickback chain.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

U

Chain doesn't stay sharp worth a hoot without the crome in my opinion. What saw shop are you dealing with?

Shop

It's been a long time since I've been there, but I did a search, and I believe it's Crocker and Son on West Morgan St. in Raleigh.

u mite go to oregons site. or get a stihl
products catalogue... also u can order windsor and carltons catologs on their sites... lg,lp, oregon and rs stihl, are fast chain... i would think with your time in u could handle non safety chain...
also, the most productive thing u can do now is learn how to sharpen chain... good luck.

Why go all the way to Raleigh to buy a chain? If your only looking for one or two chains, just buy it locally. If you want more than that, order something online, its cheaper.

To my knowledge, ALL new chain(xcluding specialty stuff like carbide)has chromed cutters. If you haven't been seeing shiny chrome you are probably looking at chains that have been used dull or with inadequate lubrecation. There are some woods (like green Ash) that tend to tar up the top of even sharp teeth but generally, sharp cutters shine after use.

green white oak around here tends to "tar up" your cutters fairly bad, there're blackis brown after a long day of cutting. Ultraman, try Dual Supply on West King St. in Hillsbough for all your saw needs, they are the best saw shop around. Ask for Wes, he is the owner and a nice guy;)

Thanks Guys!

Thanks for all the info and tips guys. I forgot to mention my office is in Raleigh, so I'm there anyway frequently. In my work I cover several counties, and I'm in Hillsborough from time to time too, so I'll check with those folks.

No one's asked, but I'm sure some have wondered: what's with the Ultraman stuff? Well, when my son was growing up there was a movie that came out featuring "Ultraman", a kind of superhero, tai kwan do, flying through the air spinning kind of guy. My son went cuckoo about him and I've used the name in several forums. I understand Ultraman dolls are still available on ebay. So, I said all that to say all this: I am no Ultraman, just a sentimental ole feller who sometimes enjoys the past more than the present.

Thanks again!

WoodsmanPro

Seems like as good a place as any to ask this. Who makes Woodsmanpro chain and bars? I am wondering if standard Oregon or Stihl…. Links and side plates will work with them.

Rob,

Cannon makes the "Woodsman Pro" bars, and have recently started using Oregon Tips with their bars as well,as far as the chain Carlton is the maker of that both equally good productsin my eyes,Cannon bars are what I think the best bars out there right now but they are $$$$ and a tad on the heavy side..I have one 24" but mostly run a Windsor Speed Tip..

Rob.
