Does anyone know where to purchase comprehensive chain saw overhaul/shop manuals? What company publishes the best? I want one that covers the new Huskies as well as ones that will cover old Remington's and Homelite. Thanks for any assistance.

The Clymer Chain Saw Service Manual (10th edition is current I believe) is about the most comprehensive manual out that I've came across. Its actually about the only one I've came across except for dealer specific literature. It has a general section for carbs, ignition, chains, etc. and then specific sections for different saws. There's not tremendous detail for each saw model, usually 4-5 pages for a given model or series. There are illustrations for primary assemblies on most saws with general steps for disassembly and reassembly, but its not down to the level of
1. remove screw (item 32 in illustration 12B) from handle assembly using 8mm wrench.
2. remove throttle latch by rotating counterclockwise at a 135 degree angle.
3. .......

well, hopefully you get the idea. It all depends upon your experience level for mechanical workmanship whether you'll find the information provided adequete to do a specific job. Again, the latest is the 10th edition I think so depending upon the year of the saw you want to work on, you can find earlier editions at various used bookstores.

Thanks

Thanks for all the information. I will follow up and get the Clymer manual (Bailey's carries). Will keep my eyes open for any others. I have mechanical skills and a full set of tools. I want the theory of operation, trouble shooting, etc. so I can be more confident in spending MORE money on my new "free" Remington Super 754 and $5.00 Homelite XL12. Like my wife says, saving all this money on free stuff is killin' us.

check you local library. I did many years ago and they had a comprehensive manual that gave me the knowledge to cure my situation at that time.

An oldie but goodie with a little info on lots of things related to saws is:
Barnacle Parp's Chain Saw Guide: Buying, Using, and Maintaining Gas & Electric Chain Saws (ISBN: 0878571973)
Walter Hall
I found a copy on abebooks.com for $1.00

Another book which is mostly just a compilation of factory info is:
Chain Saw Service Manual 5ed (ISBN: 9781111599874)
published by Intertec
I have a 5th edition and a 7th edition, and the 7th edition has a publish date of 1985, there may be a newer one than that, although as I compare them the 5th edition has more general info than the newer one. abebooks has the 5th edition for less than $6.00.

I checked and the Remington isn't included in the 10th edition. The Intertec manual mentioned is basically the earlier version that's now put out by Clymer. The 754 is in the 3rd edition, but I didn't see it in the 5th. I don't have the 4th, so not sure its in there or not, but be safe and find a 3rd edition if you want to be sure it has it. Abesbooks is a great place to look for the older editions. The XL-12 is included in the 10th.

Remington Section from 3rd Edition

Just in case you have trouble finding the 3rd edition, here's the pages dealing with the Remington. Hope this helps.
