After reading the thread of sharpening chains, what size of file is best and how do you go about sharpening it? We've always taken them down to a shop and paid about 9/chain for him to sharpen. Thanks

Search some more, look for hand filing in search, there is a hand filing thread with 15 pages, lots of good stuff. More than enough info here to learn how to put a razor sharp edge on any chain, search some more.

The key is to use a high quality, sharp file. The only thing worse than a dull chain is a dull file.

file size

it matters what size chain you have. bring the chain into the shop you want to get the files from and if he is any help at all and knows his stuff then he will tell you what you need and sell it to you.
