well gypo logger out bid me on ebay for his chain vice. so since today was a rain day i started making a prototype. i want to mount it on the school table, but i might raise up the vice so i can loop the chain underneeth. it still needs some tweeking.

i thank you again for the offer, i just felt like it would be a pain for you to ship it and i didn't want to put you through the trouble.

thanks again

if a moderator see's this please move it to the chainsaw forum, i posted here by accident.

Ken, you are definately the lumberjack of all trades!
That's a good job you did considering neccessity is the mother of invention.
DC has a 24" guide bar machined to accept a tip on either end of the bar, making it an excellent chain holder for filing, stoning etc.
Thor, I sent you a pm on the chain vice. ;)

thanks vinnie.....i'd like to figure a way to open and close the vice with a couple of levers like on a round chain grinder. it's a work in progress.

i made it 18in so i could fit a 60 dl chain on it, a longer one would be nice so i could hit more cutters before moving it. maybe i'll need to make a longer one too.

here a vice thats looks nice ,, dont know if its good or not ,,,

The only problem I see is getting up close to work on the chain. I like something flat I can clamp in a vice.

I found that an old hand saw vise works for me. The one that I use can be tilted so that you are filing level and the chain is at the proper angle. There are usually several on ebay for under $20.

When I was running a drill press in a machine shop, I was using toggle clamps to make up jigs. Looks like about three would do you just fine. Small, one motion quick release/clamp and the pressure is quickly adjustable. Come in various configurations. I don't have a source at hand for them but any machinists tool catalogue should list them.

pretty nice looking like the cam lock you have what is it off of

thanks, i made it..........the pins are from gate hinge's.....the rod is 3/4 black pipe and i beat a wooden dowel into, and drilled holes in each end to fit over the pins. the handle i had from an old tool. so i drilled and tapped a hole in the pipe for the handle.

here' 2 better pis of the cam.
