I know alot of guys out there focus on bar weight, but i havent seen much talk about chain weight.
My main point of focus was weight difference between .325 and 3/8 chain in .050 gauge.
I have a new 18in loop (Oregon) of .325 .050 72DL that weighs 9.6oz. Which is about .133oz per link or .53oz per inch of bar (18in).
I dont have a 18in loop of 3/8 .050, but i do have a 24in loop (Forester). The 3/8 .050 84DL weighs 13.9oz. Which is about .165oz per link or .58oz per inch of bar (24)
This would make the weight of a .325 .050 94DL (Based off the cannon 24in, .325 .050 bar) chain about 12.5oz, or ~1.5oz less than its 3/8 equivalent.
Obviously if you don't need 94DL on the .325 bar, the weight will even less. I dont know how many DLs you would need on a TsuMura that you swap the 3/8 tip out for a .325 tip, for example.
I know ~1.5oz is going to be unnoticeable, but just wanted to post this up here to see if my math checks out. You would think having more links would weigh more, but i guess thats just not the case.
Thoughts?
