Hi all,

Long time forum crawler i finally got around to signing up.

I have just bought a new professional chainsaw grinder to make sharpening chains for all my saws more accurate and consistant. It was advertised as supporting .325, 3/8 and .404 out of the box. I will be still hand filing while out in the field, but will throw chains on the grinder every so often to correct bad angles and un even teeth etc.

The grinding wheels that came with it say in the manual to only support .325 chain and .404 chain. I run all 3/8 now after swapping sprockets to make buying chain easier. I asked the bloke i bought it off and he said to just use the .325 wheel. An experienced CAD friend of mine said no thats wrong i should use the .404 wheel. :msp_confused:

Which wheel should i use? Should i just buy new wheels that are for 3/8? Just annoying that i have to spend more money on something that was not cheap to get it to work the way i need it to. :bang:

Thanks in advance :help:

I'd buy the right wheel. Here in the States, it would be $10 from Bailey's. (First check to make sure it wasn't supposed to come with 3...).

Mine came with 3. I don't have it in front of me so I can't tell you what the numbers are but it is fairly obvious which wheel goes to what chain. You should have a gauge that came with it too to show you how to correctly dress the wheel with the dressing block before you grind.

I've been sharpening my own chains for about ten years or so and never wished for a chain grinder. I sharpen on the job. It's real easy to mess the temper up with a grinder too.

I've always used the 1/8" wheel on the 0.325 and 3/16" wheel on 3/8" and 0.404. I use molemab grinding wheels. The 3/16" wheel has a sticker that says to use it on 3/8 and 0.404. The link below has the info on my molemab wheels at a site sponsor. It follows what I've been doing.

Thanks that was just what i was in need of. :D

From the link you gave:
Molemab 1/8" or 3.2mm thick wheels for all 1/4", .325" and 3/8" LP chains.
Molemab 3/16" or 4.7mm thick wheels for all 3/8" (except LP) and .404" chains.

I think i will be using the .404" wheel. :cool2:
