I have limited knowledge of saws...don't even have the operators manual for my Poulan Pro 16" chainsaw.....well, at least that's what the chain has on it (16).....so I went to TSC and picked up a 16" chain for a Poulan...but it is way too big. With the bar forward as far as it will go the chain hangs down below the bar. The new chain does not have the number 16 on it but rather 72. In actual lenght the new chain is about 1" longer than the old one....so do I have a smaller than 16" saw? At TSC I saw 16" and other length bars with chains on them. Can you put a longer bar/chain on a saw than what was originally on it?

You got the wrong chain. Take that one to a saw shop and have it shortened or return it to the store and get the right one.

What you bought is full 3/8 chain. Hence the 72 on the drive links. What you need for that saw is either the lo-pro chain with 56 drive links or .325 chain with 66 drive links. Look on the bar down near the adjuster and it will be stamped with exactly what chain it takes.
